The older, more clever crows never go near those traps. They are catching only young, stupid crows, not the breeders.

Hiroshi Kawachi, an official with the Wild Bird Society of Japan. He says Tokyo is losing control of the crow situation because it underestimates the intelligence of the birds and overestimates its ability to control their numbers through extermination via traps baited with mayonnaise or lard. So it's someone's job to 'exterminate' the captured crows? What a wonderful career. Would it be totally impossible, or simply too much trouble, to find a more humane solution - like make sure people don't leave food lying around in the streets (that's why the birds are in the city in the first place, easy pickings) and providing feeding centres out of town, with the food laced with bird contraceptives?

They really need to give them food laced with something - contraceptives, sleeping pills, poison - whatever it takes!

It ain't the crows' fault! They thrive in the big city because that's where the food is. I saw a documentary showing how they locate food by sight: They can see right through those cheap, translucent garbage bags. They couldn't see through dark colored bags.

The crows know what neighborhoods have the best pickings, too.. and thousands of them make a circuit from Ueno, to the Kokyo, to the west Yamanote loop (Shinjuku and Shibuya) and back across the neighborhoods to Ueno Koen.

Eliminate the food source. Tighter controls on waste.

none of you got this right. it was the government's fault from the very beginning. long time ago people were disposing of their garbage in black plastic bags, like in the rest of the world.

Japanese brilliant government decided that they wanted to spy on everyone's garbage so they ordered everyone to use thin white transparent bags. Unfortunately, tax payers money was not enough to hire somebody with a brain who would say: if we can see what's inside, so can crows, rats and stray cats.

result: this issue. and people still rely on government to solve this.
the only thing government is good for is target practice. i want my taxes back!
