The soaring suicide rate reflects the government's inability to provide necessary assistance to those needing help.

Yasuyuki Shimizu, a representative from Lifelink, a nonprofit organization engaged in suicide prevention. The total number of suicides during the first half of 2009 was 17,076, up by 768 compared to the same period last year, according to the National Police Agency. (Mainichi Daily News)

    The suicide rate in Japan reflects not so much on the government, but on the society as a whole.

    Almost 100 a day. And Mr.Shimizu blames the government. Why not name Aso and be done with it. He's to blame for everything else. Suicide is so final.

    Why not go to Chile instead? Wine, women and song and the dreadful stigma avoided.
