Those calling for abolition of the death penalty are still in a minority. There is strong public support for continuing it.

Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, suggesting that Japan will maintain the death penalty as a majority of the Japanese public support capital punishment.

    If they get their wish to abolish the death penalty, are they willing to pay more tax dollars to house the people in jail? do they even think?
