Unless half of the town's population can go back to the town, we will not be able to restore its functions. It is crucial that government-led decontamination work should be conducted to put us in a position to allow the return of townspeople.

Shinpei Ueno, deputy mayor of Namie, a town that is within the 20-km radioactive zone around the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. (Asahi Shimbun)

Is this man actually stupid? His town has gone, it cannot be decontaminated. Only 1000s of years passing will make it habitable again. Look at Priyapat, near Chernobyl, people cannot live there. He should stop giving false hope to people who do not understand the severity of the problem, and help needs to be given to resettle the people of these areas in other parts of Japan.

Radiation is not an inconvenience to be overcome, or something which a bit of gaman will fix. How is it possible that people do not comprehend the severity of the issue and what radiation will do to people, even Japanese people.

These guys just don't get the message. This is the worse nuke disaster since Chernobyl and may even become worse than that one. It's not like washing a dirty car. Fukushima nuke power plant is one of the most dangerous places on the planet and will remain so until at least the plant is decommissioned and dismantled in about 30 years time. But it will be hundreds of years before it's safe for anyone to live there again. The exclusion zone needs to be increased to 40-50 kms. the evacuees need to be told the truth, they are never going home, again! This guy is in deep denial!

ueno, as bugs bunny wud say, you sir are a maruun!

It really is starting to piss me off how utterly idiotic some of these "leaders" are, your town is finished, I hate to have to say this, but it shud be patently obvious by now. Spending $$$ for decontamination for places close to the nukes is just plain stupid, idiotic, YOU need to face reality, as well as a lot of residents, time to realize you arent going back except to pick up some belongings at best.

Yes I know its awefull but people have to start facing reality, move out, save your kids, etc. THE GOVT DOES NOT GIVE A DAMN ABOUT ANY OF YOU!

I am pretty sure that Namiecho is the town in which 122 members of the citizenry tested positive for Cesium in their urine.

People in Fukushima measured for internal radiation were never given the results just told they would be alright.

Let's wait for the report on the deposition of neptunium that degrades into plutonium, shall we? As it is, returning permanently, particularly taking children there, is insanity. But the government will probably issue a directive stating that cesium and plutonium are good for health, and everyone may return at will. The Japanese government's utter disregard for the health of its citizens thus far is staggering. Recriticality has occurred this summer that raised radiation levels and deposited radioactive iodine as far as Tokyo, (much higher in Oshu, Iwate, also in Nagano and Niigata) and the government has not uttered a word on it.
