We will make the election a war that will literally divide Japan into two.

Japan Restoration Party leader Shintaro Ishihara (Jiji Press)

It's already divided in more than two. That's why they can never agree to anything.

Is it just me, or does it seem that Ishihara is just wanting to see a war, any kind of war before he dies? Could some cosplayers get together and have an "epic battle" in front of his house for a couple of days so he can see it and be able to check such a stupid goal off of his bucket list?

What a mad old fool he is. Why is dividing the country in two a good idea? I guess if Ishihara cannot start a war with China or the US he will be content with a civil war.

The thing that just amazes me is that people in Tokyo still respect this guy. I mean what does he have to do to lose the respect of Tokyo voters? Kill small furry animals in public? After graft, banking scandals, suggestions of corruption and a long list of other things, he is still respected. It reminds me of the old saying....

"Who is the greater fool? The fool or the fool who follows him?"

Ah crazy old Ishihara... what else is new? He himself called himself bousou roujin, an out-of-control elder. Maybe he is an out of control old man.

Like the electricity is different down south? What a dumb statement.

Yep. A dozen senile idiots on one side and 120 million normal people on the other.

War, war, war... how can anyone think this man is good for Japan?

I don't think "literally" means what he thinks it means. (Unless he actually believes the country will be torn apart and create new land masses....)

I don't know...He did say he wants nuclear weapons.

Literally? Like a massive ditch dug through Kansai to literally divide Japan into two halves?

What a loon. Fitting that he and Hashimoto would get into bed together.

Unless he was speaking in English I guess the translator could be to blame.

Ever meet that guy who you just cannot imagine how he became sucessful? Ishihara sets a new bar on this. This guy was a writer before and I can see how he gained fame. But how has he kept it? I mean this guy wears a 50 story tall neon sign indicating that he is not good for the people of Japan and yet he remains popular.

Maybe, just maybe this is an indicator of a serious social disease in Japan. At least in Tokyo and Osaka where Ishihara and Hashimoto sprout from. A disease that is some kind of self-destructive, happiness sabotaging behavior. Like a politcal form of national cutting or drug abuse. It is almost as if voters want to have bad leadership or enjoy the suffering they bring.

I hope I am wrong about this. But the support these guys have defies other reasoning.

Don't worry, Hashimoto and Ishihara have made too many reckless remarks to garner any serious support from the more reasonable voters. Japan Restoration Party is pretty much done. They will soon fade to obscurity.

Thomas, I only hope you're right. They're going back to Abe though which makes me wonder.
