What happened to the Diet resolution which said, 'We will not touch agricultural products, particularly rice?'

Tochigi rice farmer Yasunori Tezuka, 60. Rice growers in Japan have started to feel insecure about their future after 12 Pacific Rim countries reached a broad agreement on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade initiative. They are afraid they will not be able to compete against cheaper imported rice. (Mainichi Shimbun)

"What happened to the Diet resolution which said, 'We will not touch agricultural products, particularly rice?'"

Two answers.

1.) The same thing that happened to those of us who lost their lifetime employment and who will get nothing from the Social Security taxes we have been paying since we started working; the world changed.

2.) Abe "won" re-elction so he doesn't need you anymore. You are a "means," not an "end." This (or most governments for that matter) treat their citizens as ATMs and once they get want they want, the citizen gets tossed into the trash bin.

We're all in the same boat.

Another case of conservatives (Japanese farmers) voting for politicians who hurt them.

Me thinks he didn't read the outcome in detail.

Oh, sorry. The days of selling over-priced rice are over. You want to cut costs so that bringing prices down will be easier? Then lobby Japan Agriculture to stop forcing you to buy and use so much of their agricultural poisons.

If that ever happens we consumers will get lower prices AND better product.

Not to worry. Ever since I landed on these shores I've been assured time and again that Japanese rice is the best in the world. Why would the Japanese consumer want inferior rice? Just because it's cheaper? They won't. You will see. The Japanese consumer will continue to pay for over-priced rice merely because it's Japanese. Right?

I thought rice was going to remain a protected product anyway?

Hell, what happened to the peaceful constitution of japan? There's a lot more to worry about than rice buddy.

Rice will be put on the market at the same prices as foreign imported rice, but our taxes will be raised to make the farmers even richer.

It may make sense for these farmers to move to a community-supported agriculture (CSA) subscription model where they sell directly to consumers, or to develop relationships with sake brewers to be the exclusive supplier for a boutique brew. They need to position themselves as a premium product in order to beat less expensive foreign product.
