When I heard about Time, I thought foreign media coverage of Japan has really finished.

Takashi Uesugi, a freelance journalist who used to be a reporter at the Tokyo bureau of the New York Times, referring to the decision by Time magazine to close its branch in Tokyo. (Japan Times)

As the full article said, there is more openness in China when it comes to access for journalists at press conferences, and THAT'S saying a lot. No wonder many just can't be bothered with Japan anymore.

It is not just the access to information. That could be a contributing factor but there is more. There is more going on in mainland Asia right now - business wise and consequently news wise.

Quite a few foreign companies that I know moved their regional offices to Hong Kong and/or Singapore since China, India, and Singapore and strong markets and there is a big interest in those from Western companies. Also those countries are also logistically more convenient to cover whole of Asia for the business and news teams than Japan.

Let's face it those moves would not have happened if people believed that mainland Asia economic boom was short-lived. It seems the expectation is Japan will lose its status as the sole economic power in Asia, although other countries do have a LOT to catch up to.

I believe we will see some interesting times in the future here in Asia.
