Philandering and drinking issues persist for Ebizo Ichikawa
TOKYO —
A bit of a headache for Mao Kobayashi, 27, newscaster for Nippon TV’s “News ZERO”?
Over a month has passed since her engagement to kabuki actor Ebizo Ichikawa, 32, was announced to the media. Kobayashi’s tour of the banquet hall of an upscale hotel in Tokyo with her parents has already been reported in the news, and preparations for the grand wedding seem to be well under way.
But some are concerned about the marriage of the kabuki “prince,” known also as a ladies’ man, who had been reportedly involved with a number of women such as actresses Ryoko Yonekura, Ryoko Hirosue and Eriko Sato. In addition, those in the entertainment industry feel uneasy about his drinking habits, described as being far worse than his disposition to philander.
One comedian comments that his first encounter with Ichikawa wasn’t exactly a pleasant one. He had been at a bar one night with fellow comedians when a familiar looking face stepped inside. “Ebizo looked like he already had a few rounds, and after recognizing some of us, he decided to meddle.”
The kabuki actor apparently selected the best known of the comedians present and began to provoke him. “He said, “I know you’re involved in combat sports, aren’t you? You think you can beat me? Come on, show me,” and the rest of us had to literally wrestle to stop the two from getting into a serious fistfight. If he carries on with that kind of behavior, sooner or later something’s bound to happen.”
A staff at a beer joint in Shibuya where Ichikawa frequents explains, “He really is the coolest guy around but so long as he doesn’t drink. Once the binging begins, he just can’t keep his hands to himself and starts making moves on any woman who happens to be sitting near him.”
Apparently, the actor’s drinking habit worsens his womanizing nature – a potential source of anxiety for the bride-to-be, although Kobayashi is also known to be a big drinker. According to a TV station insider, the newscaster can handle all-nighters quite well, despite her innocent claims that she only drinks non-alcoholic beverages.
The couple will be tying the knot in the year of the tiger. Perhaps a tigerish marital spat should be expected in the not too distant future.

I bet the marriage does not last 6 months. The dude has a problem when drunk. Little head over takes the big head. This guy needs some help and the girl should not be marrying this guy.

I wish them well but sounds like another woman who thinks she'll be the one to tame him and make him change, where all others have failed.

She'll leave him once she gets what she came for, a baby.

I agree with WhatMeWorry. It is a wedding of convenience and status.
Mao chan: Look, I married a famous kabuki actor. We are no longer together but he is rich and famous. That means I have value and worth. We also have a child which means he has to keep giving me money. I'm set!
I also wonder why does everybody successful need to be a prince, King, or Queen in Japan?

Ebizo Ichikawa = Ladies man; Mao Kobayashi = gold digger, probably not. I can say to Ichikawa-san, get it while you can before you tie the not. She will forgive you up until the day you are married.

A man who can't hold his liquor, can't control foul habits, doesn't deserve any respect. Perhaps Mao thinks she doesn't deserve it either.

Does anybody, really, give a fig about this? Two irrelevancies will marry and fail. News? No.

'can handle all-nighters quite well'--There's an asset she can add to her resume!

Is this guy really ready to get married? Maybe people should think twice before tying the knot with someone like this.

IvanCoughalot:
Philandering and drinking, definitely personal issues, but Ebizo Ichikawa is NOT an irrelevancy. I've seen him at his shumei Kabuki show a few years back and he is a phenomonal kabuki actor for someone so young and he's toured a lot in Europe for his art/craft. If one has done any performing arts in any way, one would appreciate the skill and craft and beauty that is kabuki.

He should NEVER consider being married as an option, waste of time. If I was him, I would continue tasting many different girls and keep drinking. That is one bad move right there. I am 100% sure he was NOT sober when he decided to get married! LOL

The grammar and the moral of the comment seem in need of some reflection.

Saw a tv program on him last night. I was very charmed. I'm not really interested in famous types, and especially men, on TV, but there was something about this guy that was very likeable... fun. He's very fresh and honest. Not putting on a face and not tired or cynical. At the same time his eyes are sharp and you can tell he has done a lot of serious hard work to accomplish things (traditional craft, kabuki). WHat I don't get is that girl. I see her on the news and she just seems like an idiot. Much more so than the other 20-yro poster-face women announcers. She must have something to get Ebizo.

wow, the whole country knows he screws around with other women and he's a drunk, and yet she still agrees to marry him. who's the idiot in this equation?

Yes, I appreciate the skill and art form of kabuki in which men imitate women in a way that is at best a caricature and at worst misogynist. This is ironic considering kabuki was created by and first performed by a woman. But, now people pay to watch the descendants of the men who hijacked a woman's art form profit.

kabuki is very stylized and probably strange to someone only used to Western theater/ movies, but it is a very difficult craft to learn and the top actors in the field have a sublime presence even in their everyday casual attire equal to or greater than Western actors I've seen sitting about chatting. That said I've only ever seen it on TV. Maybe you just don't like it, but I can't see anything about it that is misogynist or cheap caricature. There are tons of female fans of Kabuki which means it says something to them.

I don't know what advice to give. If he were a golf player, you could hit him with a golf club until he's blue in the face. What about here? Throw kabuki make-up in his face?
Yes, indeed. They deserve each other.
