Porn industry enjoys good sales despite recession

At the end of December, there was a gathering of young sexy girls at the Tokyo International Forum in Yurakucho. Just as many other companies were having year-end parties, this, too, was a year-end party held by a company that produces porn movies.

Insiders say the porn industry is enjoying steady growth despite the economic downturn.

“Prizes for bingo games at the party included travel tickets abroad. A cooking demonstration featuring tuna worth a few million yen was also held. Some top porn actresses, who are affiliated with the company, were given bonuses from half a million to 1 million yen. Everybody enjoyed the party,” said one attendee.

Another guest at the party said, “I have never seen such a lavish party. It’s so conspicuous, considering everybody else is cutting back on entertainment because of the recession.”

Some people might imagine that a porn producer throws a racy party, but that wasn’t the case, said the guest. “I was expecting something sexy, but it wasn’t like that at all. Rather, it was more entertaining with singers.”

Porn industry workers say the company, which invited 800 guests to the party, had its best year ever in terms of sales, thanks to its roster of popular porn actresses. No matter how bad the economy gets, there will always be a demand for their products, they say. (Translated by Taro Fujimoto)

the party is called "The Japanese AVGP (Adult Video Gran Prix)". it's basically the japanese equivalent of the AVN awards ceremony.

If porn (or human interest to sex) were so suscepitible to recession I think we human beings wouldn't be here today.

Hah - the US porn industry needs to take lessons from the Japanese porn industry. The US porn industry asked for federal funds from the TARP program here.

  • ca1ic0cat at 03:58 AM JST - 29th January

If you can't afford a soapland or delivery health I guess Rosie Palm is the next best thing. But did the US porn industry really ask for TARP funds? That sounds really strange.

  • LFRAgain at 12:16 PM JST - 7th February

Oh, please, Realist. Get off your soapbox for a second, will you? Porn is a worldwide industry and parties like this are hardly unique to Japan alone. Never heard of Hugh Hefner's yearly parties at the Playboy Mansion? If I recall correctly, Hugh hails from and operates in our grand ol' U.S. of A.

  • LFRAgain at 12:17 PM JST - 7th February

    ca1ic0cat,

Yes, the US Porn Industry asked for TARP funds. Rumor has it that it was a joke. Some have even suggested it was a form of social protest at the ridiculous structure of the TARP program.
