TOKYO —
Monica Abbott and infielder Natasha Watley, both of whom played key roles for the United States in a bid against Japan for the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, will join the Toyota women’s softball team, club sources said Tuesday. Abbott, 23, and Watley, 27, have already registered with the top league club and submitted the necessary papers ahead of Toyota’s season opener in April.
Fastballer Abbott pitched in all three games against Japan, which beat the U.S. team in the gold medal match, and was the poster child for Team USA along with Cat Osterman. Watley, who bats left-handed, was the leadoff hitter for the United States in Beijing.
