"his long, illustrious career as a player and manager"
The same illustrious manager who told his pitchers not to pitch to Tuffy Rhodes so the latter couldnt break his single season home run record? What was the actual quote, "It would be distasteful for a foreigner to break the NPB home run record."
Where's your dad from again Sadaharu?

Although I didn't agree with Oh's direction then, he stressed that he was prepared to have his record broken by someone. And Rhodes could've had plenty of opportunities to beat Oh's record after that inning, that season.

I doubt it very much if it (HR record) was Oh Sadaharu's personal decision rather NPB's collective leadership like LDP. Congratulations and Happy Retirement Mr. Sadaharu !

For someone watching from afar, it just doesn't seem right to see Oh-san making his announcement while wearing a business suit. I just realized that I'd never before seen a photo of him wearing anything other than a baseball uniform. If that isn't a baseball man, I don't know who is.
I wish him a long and happy life.

They had Ichiro give his two yen tonight. He said that there were very few people he respected in the baseball world, but Oh was one of them. How's that for a big UP YOURS to nearly everyone back home he's ever played or worked with. Real nice piece of work.

I'm still shocked and appalled at what a disrespecting, self-centred jerk Ichiro is. Sadaharu Oh quits and receives accolades from all over Japan. Nomura over at Rakuten wonders if it is ok for him to continue given a man like Oh is quitting, and what does Ichiro say? There are very few people I respect in baseball (but Oh is one of them). Very few. He actually said this twice, as if no one heard him the first time, and just to stress that this is really about him. Zero class and up his own ass. Where's the outrage over this man's lack of hinkaku? Murmured quietly if expressed at all I suspect. Or perhaps Japanese baseball is such a complete joke that Ichiro is right to express his contempt for the rabble posing as players and coaches.
