    Wow, what a cowardly coach

Cowardly? no, pretty smart, they are playing for third place in this pool. Tonga and Canada are their big matches, Today wouldve been lose lose if they played their A team - which played only 6 six days ago against France.

From : New Zealand , New Plymouth " It was an amazing game with japan showing alot of defense " I Learn Japanese Where I Study and am going to Japan in 2013 everyone was happy and Japanese people were very talkative it was cool seeing Japan play , They showed there Spirit even though they sadly lost.

    Go Japan!

Good for you, Michael. I thought it was pretty humble of the Japanese team to say he was thankful to have the chance to play the world's best team.

I didn't think Japan needs to be ashamed - they did their best and it was great to see Onozawa's try. No shame if you do your best, only if you didn't try. The ABs are great at throwing the ball around. There were some nice tries there.

Still, I would have liked to see Japan's best out there.

Thank you, No i was delighted with the Japanese Supporter's and have some amazing photo's, It was actually cool being able to talk to Japanese people in Japanese because we can hardly do that from here in New Zealand and I enjoyed my self and ,The Japan Team cant be ashamed of what they did out there it was amazing!

Japan should be playing to show the world that they(and Asia) can play this game and have made significant inroads in development since that 145 point humiliation...Aussie press is already drawing comparisons to it.. that score says Japan and Asia STILL cant play !!! Very very disappointing and cant see how it'll promote the game in this country..ps glad to see you had a good time Michael Riley.

I tipped an 88-pont win to the Kiwis yesterday - so the Brave Blossoms have exceeded my expectations! They played pretty good for their second team, too - the British commentators on the stream I watched were really raving about the ability of the Japanese guys. Rightly so, too - Japan is definitely a nation on the rise in professional sports, rugby and soccer being the stand-outs. Look out for Japan in 2019 - they have the ability to make the Semis with all the youngsters in Japan coming through the rugby ranks. Let's hope many kids put away their baseball mitts and soccer balls and pick up a rugby ball!

Business-like performance by the Blacks - we still don't have an idea of how the major teams are really travelling though. Up the Wallabies tomorrow vs Ireland!

The result was always gonna be the same it is only the score that is shocking, but not as bad as 1995 when they got done by 147 points.

Tonga will be a huge game against a huge pack. However, I can't see Japan getting past the islander refrigerators to take the game.

  • 1

    BurakuminDes

@ Disillusioned - Japan has beaten Tonga (I think) the last 7 times they have played. I reckon it will be a real classic game - nothing in it - but Tonga will be playing to a crowd of probably 80 percent support behind them. They sure are big units that Tongan mob. But I will have a lazy bet on the Blossoms!

This is a sign of improvement? "Holding" New Zealand to just 83 points, while only scoring 7! Sorry, but IMO this is another classic example of the Japanese media frenzy/inward focus creating an expectation that could not possibly be met.

@lucabrasi - give www.firstrowsports.tv a go. Been working well for me - the Japan-AB game had 6 different streams. but I'm constantly scouting for new sites as they close them without notice! (Dont tell anyone..... ;-))

@herefornow. I don't think there was any Japanese media frenzy at all. And very few Japanese people I know even knew there was a world cup going on.

Ironically, I think the Cherry Blossoms have more people hoping they do well and not wanting to castigate them outside of Japan. Unfortunately, Japanese are only interested in their team when they win. e.g Every man and his dog wants to meet the nadeshiko japan players, but nobody talked about them a year ago.

@herefornow Japanese media frenzy ???? Can you even remotely read or speak Japanese ? Where is the frency that you speak in the news, whether on TV or newpaper ???

I enjoyed the match.... for what is was. An interesting thing about this world cup (forgive me if this has mentioned elsewhere) is that they seem to have designed a ball which is difficult to kick. Penalty and conversion attempts have been skewing all over the place. Could that possibly mean that come semi final - final time, the games might be won by teams scoring tries, and not PKs and drop kicks. I hope so.

Watched my first match the other day. Confusing...reminded me of a drunken brawl, with the same rules. Glad everyone enjoys it but i lasted 5 minutes.

Well said! The thing holding me back from being a real rugby union fan are the kick-athons that occasionally happen - like the Georgia-Scotland match. No tries between them. Nothing more sleep-inducing than watching guys constantly take the penalties rather than running the ball - it won't convert any fans of other sports. Fortunately we have some teams who like to throw the ball around and can run with it - All-Blacks, Wallabies and even Japan being notable examples.

You're right there, bro! I know traditionalists hate rule changes, but this seems to be an area crying out for reform. If I were King of Rugby, I'd say that each PK in a game must be taken by a different back (we all know forwards are donkeys). Then you wouldn't get the specialist kickers dominating quite so much, and teams would prefer to run the ball rather than risk "Two left feet lucabrasi" (for example) kicking for goal.

herefornow: Media frenzy? What you smoking? I've never heard any Japanese commentators or reporters saying anything about any possibility of winning against the Kiwis. All I've been hearing is them saying that they hope to simply put up some kind of fight against the #1 team in the world. Everyone pretty much expected them to lose against New Zealand and France.

Herefornow, 83 is less than 145 and therefore better. The maths aren't difficult mate!

  • -1

For Japan, this match was not about winning, it was all about enjoying the game: mostly the part where allowing several 400 pound Tongan-New Zealanders plow through you like you weren't even there to begin with

No Japanese media frenzy...they show the match between Japan-France (channel 4) but didnt dare (?) to have this one broadcoasted on japanese tv...afraid of another 145pts, not good for japanese sensibilities !

Nice to see a good beat down. Winners should always win and win big. I commend the Kiwis for not letting up. True, Rugby needs parity, and blowouts like this discourage people from sticking with their team. But, look at it from the talent aspect. Japan has improved. New Zealand has stayed the same. Japan will continue to improve, and NZ will always be at the same level. Rugby is a fringe sport and they do need spin to market their product to the world. I watched the game online, but there was no mention on TV, nor was the game live on regular TV. Frenzy? Hardly. Yet, watching high calibre teams play (anyone) is amazing in any sport. On the world stage to see the best play your country is an honour. The only way is up.

Explains why I never heard a whisper about the match until I checked it out myself. Jeez... 83-7... that's just plain humiliating. I thought Japan didn't want to repeat the trouncing they took before at the hands of the All Blacks. Anyway, better luck next time... not that it can get any worse.

Good to see Japan get the intercept and runaway try, the bar erupted when that happened, - GO JAPAN.

While I understand the coaches strategy, if I was a starter & he bumped me from the lineup I wud NOT be happy!

For christs sake ITS THE WORLD CUP put yr best team on to start, if a starter is sore or injured by all means rest them, but how the hell will your best IMPROVE if they only play weak sides!

These guys are all top level they have no problems on 4-6days rest, what a bloody waste! Just imagine if Japan put their best on & lost only by 20pts or something, damn we will NEVER see that what a shame

Its a team game not an individual sport, no room for a selfish player, and there is also a strategy to playing a competition such as world cup.

If you dont undertand then stick to 10 pin bowling or perhaps gridiron is more your style, do they even have a gridiron world cup?

I played in LOTS of hockey, football, soccer & rugby etc games & tournaments in my youth, & we ALWAYS our best teams on to start, & if some teams were winning by large margins they wud substitute to give others experience, but YOU ALWAYS start with your best!

To go into a game, especially a world championship ALREADY ALL BUT CONCEDING is a strategy for LOSERS imo, what a pathetic strategy! If your team isnt going to go in trying to win then stay the hell where you belong, at home, disgusting!

  • 0

    calm down

Agree with GW .Japan is not going to show the world they've improved these last 16 years since that walloping by beating minnows Canada or Tonga..They were presented with the mother of all opportunities to get that monkey off their back and show the world they CAN compete at a higher level than the minnow pool.Instead, they showed the world nothings changed and they dont belong on the same field..they won nothing but sympathy

  • -1

    smithinjapan

GW: "To go into a game, especially a world championship ALREADY ALL BUT CONCEDING is a strategy for LOSERS imo, what a pathetic strategy!"

I agree with you completely, but you of course know this is a strategy to defend their poor performance. Yesterday I heard four people talk about how it was only because it was Japan's second string, not their best players. It's a built-in excuse for losing. Had they put their best players in and suffered the same slaughter there is nothing they could say. But now they can talk about how they lost because it wasn't their best players.

Love the NZ crowd, cheering so loudly when the Japanese made a breakaway late in the game and booing loudly when it was deemed from a forward pass.

Also thought it was great to hear them booing Sonny Bill Williams for kicking the ball out to end the game as Japan were attacking after the siren.
