Tamada double sends Grampus to top of J-League as Verdy holds Reds

NAGOYA —

Keiji Tamada grabbed a brace to send Nagoya Grampus top of the J-League with a 3-2 win over Shimizu S-Pulse on Wednesday. Nagoya had twice fallen behind at Mizuho Stadium but Tamada’s superb long-range free kick sealed victory for Dragan Stojkovic’s men and put them one point clear of Kashima Antlers and Asian club champions Urawa Reds.

With 11 games of the season left to play, Nagoya top the table on 42 points after a third straight win, one clear of Urawa, who were held 1-1 by Tokyo Verdy, and Kashima, 2-1 winners at Vissel Kobe. In Hokkaido, Tomokazu Myojin snatched a 72nd-minute equalizer to give Gamba Osaka a 3-3 draw at Consadole Sapporo while bottom club JEF United Chiba earned a 0-0 draw at Jubilo Iwata.
