Lance's unintended greatest contribution to the sport is becoming a lightning rod for all the sins committed. It's just a human need to find an individual to hate and blame; in this case he is both guilty and the greatest winner among all the dopers, so if a single individual must be chosen, then he is the logical choice. In this way, it may be possible to reform the sport without killing it. At the same time, the concentration of blame and aggression on one individual means there is also a very great danger of believing the sport is reformed when it is not.
