Asashoryu beats Hakuho to win 22nd title

OSAKA —

Mongolian grand champion Asashoryu defeated yokozuna rival Hakuho to win his first title of the year on the final day of the Spring Grand Tournament on Sunday. Asashoryu got both arms around Hakuho and twisted him round and out of the dohyo with a well executed arm-bar throw. Asashoryu’s 13th victory of the tournament secured his 22nd Emperor’s Cup and first title in four meets.

In an all ozeki match-up, Kotomitsuki shrugged off a flurry of slaps and thrusts to see off Chiyotaikai and secure a winning record. Elsewhere, Georgian Kokkai wrapped up an impressive tournament with a 12th win after flooring ozeki Kaio. Estonian Baruto also finished with 12 wins by tearing down former ozeki Miyabiyama (7-8), who had initially been awarded the win before ringside judges reversed the decision in Baruto’s favor.

Oh glorious king. Thanks for coming to stay in my 2-mat room and celebrating this most glorious occasion in between my teaching breaks at G-com. Sorry about my wife. I don't know how I got myself into this mess. I think we need to live seperately for a while. Anyway, long live the king.

The king will rightly supersede Takanohana in May. All hail the king.
