What a waste of public funds..

Another gold medal for the construction industry and disqualification for Taro taxpayer.

Thousands of people, children, going mad, fat and depressed in temporary housing in Tohoku and we're spending tax money on large scale vanity projects in the shape of a discarded bicycle helmet...

Demolition was supposed to begin last July but was delayed by irregularities in the bid process

Is that what we're calling corruption these days?

well said all... the most depressing of all is the demolition of Kasai Rinkai Koen for the stupid boat race event (olympic) Rinkai Koen is always the best place for Hanami due to lesser visitors, but not anymore, thanks for Olympics! I hope it won't back fire Japan later...

@UK9393 "Thousands of people, children, going mad, fat and depressed in temporary housing in Tohoku" RIght! not to mention the people suffering on Okinawa, and Tokyo's homeless, and the lack of many family services, and mental facilities.

designed by award-winning British-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid, have been plagued by problems, including complaints from some prominent architects, who say the design is too big and expensive.

Not only that, there's quite some stories that some buildings designed by Zaha are deemed unsafe. Since Japan is an earthquake prone country I really hope the designer took that in consideration when designing the new stadium.

Your taxes at work in a country that has the world's largest public debt. It's a fact that, every country or city that hosts the games promotes it as a huge economic boost, but the reality is, it is always a huge economic flop and ends up costing the host millions. Ganbaru nihon!

@klausdorth

UK9393 took the words out of my mouth.

Tohoku residents are still living in temp housing and here they spend millions (or is it billions or even more) Yen for an

oversized bicycle helmet.

My thoughts exactly !

Will they at least make profit thru the Olympic games and provide this profit to the ones who need it most?

Even if they do, by that time, it'll probably be too late...

I have to disagree with most of these sentiments. Yes, renew and reuse older buildings and venues when possible, but the National Stadium was a dinosaur ( built in 1958 ) and in this case if your city is going to host the Olympics you must have a first class, functional signature stadium.

I don't disagree, but does it have to be so ugly?

Pauli USA, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum was built in 1932 and reused in 1984; its use not only saved money but, more importantly, served as an emotional bridge between those eras.

Demolition of the National Stadium is both a farce and a tragedy.

why it has to be NEW stadium? if the building is old, why don't they just renovate it? it's cheaper, it's practical and it will also not bother the lives of many people (forcedly moved out to give way for OLYMPICS).

Waiting for that one guy to say, "But it creates jobs."

A new look and that cannot be all bad, but who wants to view anything during the wretched summer heat season?

Let the BICKERING GAME begin. Everyone after their cut of the pie...law regulators, labor unions, investors, you name it. By the time the bickering ends, it will cost three or four times more to complete and...in the end - gets pass down on consumers to pay it off !!
