The Chunichi Dragons and Hiroshima Carp hooked up in a lively pitchers’ duel at Nagoya Dome on Sunday night, battling to a 1-1 tie in Central League play. Despite combining for just two runs, both teams had ample scoring opportunities and banged out a total of 16 hits.

The game looked like it would be anything but a low-scoring affair when the Dragons jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and loaded the bases in the second. But Carp starting pitcher Kenta Maeda settled into a groove, allowing just three more hits in seven total innings while striking out seven.

Dragons starter Soma Yamauchi was just as effective, yielding a single run over seven innings. His only blemish came on third baseman Brian Barden’s sacrifice fly in the top of the third inning, a line shot to center that plated centerfielder Yoshihiro Maru. The Dragons threatened to score a walk-off victory in the bottom of the tenth, but Carp reliever Dennis Sarfate struck out right fielder Kei Nomoto with the potential winning run on third to disappoint the home crowd of 30,298.

Elsewhere in the Central League, first-place Yakult avoided a sweep at the hands of Yomiuri with a 3-1 win, and Yokohama tied Hanshin 1-1. In the Pacific League, lowly Rakuten defeated first-place Softbank for the second straight game, 7-2, while Nippon Ham beat Orix 3-2 and Chiba edged Seibu 4-3.
