FC Tokyo beats Kawasaki to win Nabisco Cup

TOKYO —

FC Tokyo was crowned Nabisco Cup champions after a well-earned 2-0 win over J-League leader Kawasaki Frontale in Tuesday’s final. Kawasaki came into the match looking to make it third time lucky after defeats in the final in 2000 and 2007, but goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima allowed a seemingly innocuous shot from 18-year-old Takuji Yonemoto to creep in at his near post after 23 minutes.

Tokyo withstood a sustained spell of pressure early in the first half and Sota Hirayama finished off a swift counter attack on the hour mark to seal victory for the 2004 champions. ‘‘We knew it would be a very hard game for us today. Clearly Frontale are the stronger team in terms of both form and players,’’ said Tokyo manager Hiroshi Jofuku. ‘‘But we all worked together to reach the final. The disappointment of the players who weren’t able to play today was a source of strength for us and this was truly a victory for the whole squad.’’

A Nabisco cup is about as useful as a chocolate teapot.
