A handsome fellow - I wish him luck. It'll be interesting to follow his career - I wonder if he'll ever be unlucky enough to have to make a choice between prayer and a wrestling bout? Hope not. It's also nice to read that his coach has taken the dietary restrictions in his stride, without making a bit deal out of it. I wish more people would react thus.

i wonder how far he will go up the ranks! as long as his sumo is exciting, i don't care which country he is from.
Wakarimasen
Another nail in the coffin of sumo.

With respect, Wakarimasen, I see this as a positive thing. As any sport becomes yet more diverse, it acquires new skills, and teaches new skills to others.
There are well-known challenges for sumo to overcome related to the training, and persistent match--fixing allegations for which there is strong statistical evidence.
However, this is something to be celebrated, in my humble opinion.

I'm sure he can be Yokozuna soon by wrestling with his body odor.
Gurukun
You gotta admit, he's got a great smile. I hope he moves up quiclky. He'd be a great spokesperson for the sport. Especially with all the problems surrounding sumo right now.

Nice headline this time! Nothing wrong with the last "First African sumo wrestler makes victorious debut", the problem was some illiterate people saying: "from the title, i assumed he would be black." :/

Sounds like he's committed to sumo, and to the traditions. Good news there.
I look forward to reading about his matches here on JT.
