Date retired from the WTA Tour in 1996 in the prime of her career after reaching the Wimbledon semifinals
I saw that match at Wimbledon! She played Steffi Graf (who was virtually unbeatable at Wimbledon in those days) and was beating her in the final set, until Graf moaned about the light and got the game suspended for the day. The next day the momentum was all Graff's and she won easily.
Kimiko was "too Japanese" at that moment - she let Graff moan and whine her way off court when she should've stood her ground and made Graf play the game out that evening. Sad, because she probably would've won the final and become the first Japanese woman to win Wimbledon. But we'll never know...
