Tokyo Olympic organizers on Thursday said they have added electronics manufacturer Fujitsu to the list of domestic gold sponsors for the 2020 Games.

Tokyo 2020 Olympic chief Yoshiro Mori and Fujitsu CEO Masami Yamamoto signed an official contract naming Fujitsu as a gold partner for the 2020 Games.

Fujitsu has been named as the “Data Center Partner” for the 2020 Olympics and paralympics, and will provide servers necessary for applications and data for the Games.

Yamamoto emphasized the importance of real-time data in the age of social networking services, and said the services Fujitsu will provide will be useful even after the 2020 Games.

Also present were Japanese Olympic Committee Secretary General Tsuyoshi Aoki and President of the Japanese Paralympic Committee Yasushi Yamawaki.

Fujitsu joins Canon, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) and Asahi Breweries Ltd as domestic sponsors. NEC was also named a gold partner on Thursday.

They should call them corporate Gold Medal Recipients, as these businesses will receive big payouts for their involvement in the Games, which if Tokyo follows the pattern of previous Olympics, we will all be paying off the debt of through higher taxes for years to come.

Interesting, but unsurprising. Panasonic & Samsung have always been the major electronics sponsors at each Olympic Games, but with such close govt. ties (go to any municipal office and you'll see what I mean), it was inevitable that either / both Fujitsu / NEC we're going to get the contracts. Both brands are irrelevant abroad...
