Fukudome picks up 3 hits, 2 RBIs in Cubs' win

ST LOUIS, Missouri —

Kosuke Fukudome went 3-for-5 with two RBIs in his first game in the cleanup spot Saturday, helping the Chicago Cubs to a 9-3 rout of the St Louis Cardinals. Fukudome reached on an infield single in the second inning and had RBI doubles in the fourth and seventh innings en route to raising his batting average to .348.

At Yankee Stadium, Hideki Matsui extended his hitting streak to 13 games with an RBI single in the third inning and went 2-for-5 as the New York Yankees beat the Seattle Mariners 6-1. Ichiro and Kenji Jojima both went 2-for-4 for Seattle, with Suzuki driving in a run with a third-inning single. Elsewhere, Tadahito Iguchi hit a go-ahead, two-run double in the third inning of the San Diego Padres’ 7-2 victory over the Florida Marlins. He was 2-for-5. Akinori Iwamura hit his second homer of the season with a solo shot off Josh Beckett in the eighth inning in the Tampa Bay Rays’ 12-4 drubbing at the hands of the Boston Red Sox. Iwamura finished 2-for-4.
