Giants beat Tigers 4-2 in Central League

The Yomiuri Giants defeated the Hanshin Tigers 4-2 in the Central League at Koshien Stadium in Hyogo on Sunday. With the victory, the Giants salvaged the weekend series after tying the Tigers 4-4 on Friday and losing 9-4 on Saturday.

The visitors got all the offense they would need in the top of the third against Hanshin starter Randy Messenger (11-4), banging out five hits and scoring three runs while sending eight men to the plate. Second baseman Daisuke Fujimura and first baseman Josh fields connected for RBI singles, while catcher Shinnosuke Abe drove in another run with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to deep right field.

Giants starter Tetsuya Utsumi (15-5) pitched an efficient seven innings, allowing no earned runs to lower his league-leading ERA to 1.59. Closer Yuya Kubo allowed one hit and no runs in the ninth to notch his 18th save of the season.

Elsewhere in the Central League, first-place Yakult beat Chunichi 6-1, and Hiroshima trounced Yokohama 10-4. In the Pacific League, Softbank edged Rakuten 2-1, Seibu beat Chiba Lotte 4-1, and Orix blanked Nippon Ham 4-0.
