More sports reports not stating what really happened this afternoon. Asashoryu's bout had to go to a judges decision and they all got it wrong. NHK replays clearly showed that Tochinonada's hand touched the Dohyo before Asashoryu hit the deck. If you stay in middair and your opponent (Tochinonada) touches the ring first then surely you win ? For some reason (some old-fashioned stubborn reason) they do not use video technology and the judges making the call were all on the wrong side of the fall. But don't expect Asashoryu to get any favours from that lot.
Actually, the Shimpan DO use video recordings to make their call. The head Shimpan is connected via earphone to 1-2 Shimpan in the video booth who watch replays and report.
However, while Asa's performance was definitely not up to par here, the replay does clearly show that Tochinonada touched the ground first, so I can't imagine why they called the bout for him. Maybe because they wouldn't consider this win graceful enough for a yokozuna? Or maybe because they didn't want everyone to start throwing the zabuton directly at them.
I agree that Tochinonada hit the dirt first, said that the fight from the beginning showed that Asa was not up to scratch.
For me it was clear that Asa would lose unless he pulled a hat-trick.
We will have to wait to see what happens.
Said that not the first time that the judges went against the video shown on telly.
