I still think Asashoryu is twice the Yokozuna that Haskuho is....

I concur. Or three times. 22 cups to 7, or something like that, plus three times the menace. Have a feeling Asa is on his way down though. Two tournament ban last year probably had its desired effect of weakening his iron grip on the sport.

Kotooshu put up a decent effort against Hakuho yesterday, probably inspired by the thought of more yoghurt to come.

The ban did hurt him -- more than I thought ti would -- but I don't believe Asa's on the way down. I personally think that the media is full of Hakuho, full of Kotooshu, and full of others because for such a long time, it was only Asashoryu who was beating everybody. Now that Hakuho's a Yokozuna, he'll get a lot of spotlight, but I don't believe Asa's finished yet. He'll bounce back, and continue his winning ways....

    I am with BT.

Asa still got a way to go, Hakuho currently is the main-draw. As for Kotooshu he will need to pull his belt tighter and get going. Ama, Kotomitski, Baruto, etc will otherwise take the lime-light of him.

Myself look more towards an Ama, etc fight as he can upset the big names, Kotooshu is just not there yet on a consistant basis.

Had high hopes for him(as did many others) but his overall record is not that great.

    Just my view.

you guys are dreaming or wishing bad to the only man who is able to put the sumo in the center of attention - Kotooshyu. Nobody will take the lime light of Kotooshyu because he is the man who is able to do what he wants when he wants it, and no Japanese person will protest his yokozuna rank because Kotooshyu is what a real yokozuna should be - strong, devoted to the sport, polite, respectful and kind. I wish to see his lovely smile after each bout and each tournament. Kotooshyu should be yokuzuna and he will be the most charming yokozuna in the world. Now he is the most charming ozeki, of course. If he is demoted to the juryo division he will still be the most charming rikishi. imagine the sumo without him - I will stop watching sumo :)

Non-one is wishing him bad as you suggest. But we go according to the facts and stats.

If you are supporter of him than you are a supporter and kudos if you support him when he is down. Too many supporters only cheer when their team/person wins.

As for him becoming Yokozuna, he NEEDS to win 2 consecutive tourneys AND show a consistant winning record prior to that(9-6 is just not there).

Even if he gains Yokozuna he will need to retain a winning record of lets say 11 wins per tourney. Any Yokozuna with less than that will face pressure to resign.

You think he is up to it?

  • ExPrinceska at 09:46 AM JST - 28th July

Zen Builder, I think he is able to be an yokozuna, the future will show it. Anyway, I do not want this discussion to be about Kotooshyu all the time :) so I say congratulations to Hakuho (because maybe this is his last competition when he will beat to 0).

  • Zen_Builder at 09:54 AM JST - 28th July

    Princess.

I am sure he will show it but it will take another 2~3 years, IMHO. And yeah the future will show.

the sad thing is that now the sumo tournament is over, there is nothing interesting in the sports news to discuss, of course until the Olympic games. i wish sumo was Olympic sport and Kotooshyu the Olympic champion (of course not for Japan!)

Sorry, ExPrinceska, but Kotooshu is way to flaky for me to have any hope that he'd get the job done. Big of him to get makekoshi for this tourney, but a 9-6 showing after posting a 15-0 basho win? Not good. Kotooshu will end up like Kaio and Chiyotaikai if he isn't careful: able to pull out a win once in awhile with a lot of flare, but not able to put it together to gain promotion, languishing between 10-5, 11-4, 9-6, and the occasional kodoban. I really had hopes that the Bulgarian Giant had pulled it together, turned the corner, and would win this tourney (especially after asashoryu withdrew) to gain promotion, but he just looked like the Kotooshu of the last year -- spotty in his wins, and unable to dig out when he fell behind witgh a loss on the first day.

Personally, I've been impressed with Ama. He's a strong Sekiwake, and if he continues as he is, and can pull together enough wins to gain a basho or two, he will find himself as an Ozeki soon enough. Baruto and Kotomitsuki are others I'm eyeing also.

And top repeat what I posted above: Asashoryu is still the best Sumo Rikishi in the world. 白鵬 is good, and I think he is a decent yokozuna....but Asashoryu is the man to beat....

Blue Tiger, I do not believe your suppositions because they are just suppositions. Somebody like you predicted great future for Kokkai several years ago - and now what, he is invisible. Baruto is moving towards invisibility too. Kotooshyu on the other hand is not invisible. He wins or he loses but he always returns.

  • Blue_Tiger at 08:33 PM JST - 29th July

I did? I predicted a great future for Kokkai? I thought he'd do well ,but "predicted a great future"? When did I do this? I did see Kokkai once in Tokyo Station back on 02 or03....

As far as Kotooshu not moving towards invisibility, maybe not, but he is moving towards irrelevancy, as Chiyotaikai and JKaio have...

  • ExPrinceska at 09:01 PM JST - 29th July

Blue Tiger with the nice avatar, Kotooshyu has just won a big tournament and you announced him irrelevant!

  • Blue_Tiger at 09:53 PM JST - 30th July

ExPrinceska, he won a big tourney, but then went a disappointing 9-6. Yes, irrelevant, unless he turns it around and gets consistent....

  • ExPrinceska at 10:13 AM JST - 31st July

    ok... I see

  • ExPrinceska at 11:51 PM JST - 11th August

I am so sad. kotooshyu lost to Asashoryu today in the exhibition performance. No news on Japan today about it?
