Hamaguchi set for comeback at Poland Open

TOKYO —

Kyoko Hamaguchi is gearing for her return to competition at the Poland Open in August, the five-time women’s world champion and Beijing Olympic bronze medalist revealed Thursday.

Hamaguchi has been taking time off since finishing third in the 72-kg class at the women’s wrestling world championships in Tokyo last October. She also sat out the national championships in April, which doubled as a qualifier for this year’s worlds in Denmark in September. ‘‘Through building up practice my desire to compete on the world has strengthened naturally in my heart,’’ Hamaguchi wrote in her personal blog. ‘‘I wanted this year to be a year to challenge anew and I am looking forward to my first individual away competition.’’ The Poland Open is being held in Warsaw from Aug. 13-14.
