Next headline, Ichiro 35, achieves 500 RBI in his baseball career.

some14some- Ichiro's role is not to drive in runs. He's the lead-off batter, which means that his role is to get on base (which he obviously does well) so that the 3rd and 4th batters in the line-up can drive him in. Instead of looking at how many RBIs Ichiro has driven in, why don't you look at how many runs he's scored? You might as well start criticizing National League pitchers for not producing enough RBI's when they go up to bat. Stop hating!

ok. looking at how many runs he's scored. 1700 hits.842 runs. not even a 50% pace. of course, this isn't his fault. he's just stuck on a crap team. he chose it though as he could have moved last year, but decided to stay put. maybe the lure of working for a japanese owner in american baseball helped him with his decision. was a big mistake . such a waste of a great talent.

Ichiro only cares about Ichiro. He had plenty of chances to play on a "real" major league team, but that would take the spotlight off of him and on the entire team. If he played on a better team many of his hits would not occur because there would be a greater possibility of runners being on base when he came to bat consequently, he would reach base on a fielder's choice. Lastly, when you are playing on a last place team and you are behind 4 or 5 runs in a game do you really think the opposing pitcher is going to throw his best stuff to Ichiro?

jinjapan- Ichiro's career run-to-hit ratio is 49.5%, which you suggest is sub par ("1700 hits.842 runs. not even a 50% pace"). Actually, if you compare this number to hall of famer Wade Boggs (a similar type of hitter), this ratio is not too shabby. Boggs' career run-to-hit ratio was barely over 50% at 50.2%. Rounding off to the nearest percent, this statistic for both players is identical. I'm sorry, but let's all be real here; Ichiro is a great player. Stop portraying him like he's Barry Bonds, A-Rod, or Manny Ramirez.

"Lastly, when you are playing on a last place team and you are behind 4 or 5 runs in a game do you really think the opposing pitcher is going to throw his best stuff to Ichiro?"

Sure, why not. That's the time that you can get away with challenging a batter. If you screw up, the damage is still limited. Besides, there are plenty of pitchers that respect the batting skills of Ichiro and would be proud to get him out.

Pope, I hope you also realize that a fielder's choice is not counted as a hit in the scorebooks.

Finally, having men on base while you play infield is actually a disadvantage for most parts. Having a man on means that the first baseman has to give up space while covering first. The middle infielders may also give up space if he has to cover second on a steal (thus, sometimes managers/coaches call for hit-and-runs to get that advantage). Also, infielders have to move up if they want to try for a double play, giving less reaction time. Pitchers have to pitch from the stretch. Although some pitchers do that all the time now whether there is a man on or not, a full wind-up usually can achieve a little more velocity. Etc.

Today's headline: Mariners' win Ichiro gets no hit. what's the fun? bunt and run, hit-and-run? that is not MLB play.

  • hoserfella at 02:21 PM JST - 5th July

conquerorofUranus, Ichiro has 448 career RBIs. Where did u get your grossly-inflated numbers??

  • Kwaabish at 02:32 PM JST - 5th July

    horsefella,

I think he mistook the number for career RUNS SCORED, not RBI. That's career, NPB plus MLB. Ichiro had, at the end of 2007, 956 RBI's and 1440 Runs (NPB + MLB)

  • hoserfella at 02:48 PM JST - 5th July

either way, it's pointless to add his Japan numbers. Who cares how he fared against double-A talent in the ping-pong table sized stadiums here.

  • Kwaabish at 03:43 PM JST - 5th July

    Horse,

I tend to agree not to add the numbers. But then, I'm not against any NPB player getting the ROY awards his first year in the MLB.

  • hoserfella at 04:47 PM JST - 5th July

neither an I, I think Ichiro is a great player.

Must've added the one by mistake. I TPye funnnny somteimews. Meant to write "about 500".

  • conqueror_of_Uranus at 06:30 PM JST - 5th July

And I'm sure I saw on the news that he reached his 1500th JBL/MLB RBI.

  • romulus3 at 09:46 PM JST - 6th July

Ichiro is a great player. He scores freely all around the states. He has batted in a few let me tell you. he never gets stuck on first base like us jerks. it does not matter what they throw at him, he can handle it. whether it be a comprehensive drubbing or coming from behind. Ichiro has done it all and in many different positions. It seems that the J-bashers here are a little jealous.
