    Should be a lock HOF spudman, he is a lead off hitter...usually not many folks on base when he's up. Do you watch baseball?

  • spudman at 09:52 PM JST - 19th August

    He leads off once a game. Yeah I watch it but bottom sucking Mariners, never. Truth is if Ichiro didn't have hoards of free spending Japanese fans filling the Mariners coffers with yen he would have been traded away a long time ago. Good sportsman? you bet, a winning sportsman? only in second rate competitions.

    He is a lock for HOF if he quit today. He is one of the best players to ever play the game, in the top 25 for sure. Anyone who cannot read his stats and his golden glove status does not understand baseball. He is unmatched.

    A few years ago he decided to hit for power, results 25 homers. He has about 200 dingers in his career. And over 3000 hits. He will get to 4000 for sure before he is done, maybe even 5000.

    The mariners are paying him $17 million this year. The team may suck by Ichiro is one of the highest paid players in the world.

    Some of you need to learn a little about baseball before posting comments. Since when is a lead-off hitter supposed to hit homeruns? His job is to get into scoring position so that he can score runs. He does that. All of the great lead-off men in MLB history never had many RBI. He will be in the HOF for sure. I've never heard of a two-time MVP not making the Hall.

    Ichiro is having a great season, but take a look at Joe Mauer.

    Dude's hitting .383. Halfway through August. With 25 HRs. At catcher.

    There are exceptions. Ricky Henderson of A's hit 297 home runs in his career, and had 3000+ hits. He is also a alltime stolen base king. This was in the recent '80-'90's. Probably the best combination of power, speed, and RBI run producer for leadoff hitter.

    Welcome to Japdantoday.

    "Since when is a lead-off hitter supposed to hit homeruns?"

    Only when it applies to Ichiro. This is like Mark Teixeira because he doesn't have double figures in stolen bases. But you'll get use to this type of crowd here.

  • nigelboy at 03:44 AM JST - 21st August

    Sorry. I meant to sayT "This is like criticizing Mark Teixeira because he doesn't have double figures in stolen bases"

    If Ichiro increases his pace for Runs scored just a little more, he'll not only have 9 straight season of 200+ hits but 100+ runs as well. I believe Lou Gehrig is the only player to have 8 seasons of 200+ and 100+ runs.

  • sfjp330 at 04:57 AM JST - 21st August

    I believe Lou Gehrig is the only player to have 8 seasons of 200+ and 100+ runs.

    Pete Rose has 10 seasons of 200+ hits and 9 seasons of 100+ runs. He had 4256 hits in the lifetime.

    Pete Rose had 6 seasons with 200+ hits AND 100+ runs scored. Lou Gehrig had 8. Ichiro is going for 9.

    nigelboy;

    You need to get your facts right. Here is a link: 10 seasons, 200+hits, 9 season 100+ runs. Pete Rose: www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rosepe01.shtml?redir

    Give me your link on 6 seasons.

    I think you're confused. I stated "200+ hits AND 100+ runs scored" in a single season.

  • sfjp330 at 05:39 AM JST - 22nd August

    Nigelboy;

    What does it matter. The fact is Pete Rose had 10 seasons with 200+hits and 9 seasons of 100+ runs. Does it mean it doesn't count because it was not done in a same year? I really don't know anybody that keeps statistics the way you look at because it's insignifcant. Facts are that Pete Rose had 4256 hits in his career in MLB. Comparison for Ichiro, if exclude Japanese league baseball statistics, which is not MLB, he has only 2000 hits in U.S. MLB. If you look at some of the Japanese top pitchers and hitters like Ogawa, Irabu, Kawakami, Matsuzaka, Iishi, Fukudome, Kaz Matsui, they are at best very average or below average in the U.S. MLB. Give credit to Ichiro, Only Ichiro made to top and others, not much to show. This tells you how overated Japan baseball is.

  • nigelboy at 06:19 AM JST - 22nd August

    I think you're confused once again sfjp330.

    I've never stated that Pete Rose is not a great player. You're the one that brought Pete Rose to the discussion, remember? I simply pointed out the fact that Ichiro is on a verge of surpassing a record matched by Lou Gehrig. When Ichiro matched this last season, it was reported by the media. As you stated, Pete Rose had 9 season of 100+ runs out of 23 seasons he played. Ichiro is going for 9 straight since he entered MLB. Pete Rose had 10 seasons of 200+ hits out of 23 seasons he played. Ichiro is going for 9 straight since he entered MLB. So what if Japan baseball league is inferior. I know for a fact that they are. I think most people in who follow baseball know for a fact that they are. But so what??? Even if he hangs it up this year, even with his 2000 hits in the MLB, he's a first ballot hall of famer.

  • mousepotato464 at 10:13 AM JST - 25th August

    He is having another great season. I wish the team was better. Will we ever see Ichiro in a post season game?
