Ichiro acknowledges cheers from fans after hitting an RBI-single off of Texas Rangers’ Derek Holland that scored Josh Wilson in the second inning of the second baseball game of a doubleheader in Arlington, Texas. The hit gave Ichiro his ninth consecutive 200th hit season.

By the time Ichiro retires I expect he'll have set a few more records and extended the ones he has. He's an exciting player both on offence and defence, a gentleman and best of all, he's breaking records without performance-enhancing drugs, an increasingly rare phenomenon in major league baseball.

Congrats to Ichiro! The next milestone for him would be 3000 hits in the majors, and I'm sure that it is well within reach.

Great Job Ichiro!

No doubt Ichiro is great, but I'll take Derek Jeter over Ichiro any day; his slugging % is approx 25% higher and all you baseball know-it-alls should know that's what counts in offensive. So cut the "Van Jones" type of comments and understand that Ichiro plays for Ichiro only.

You do know enough about baseball to know they play different positions, right?
I'm curious to see what outfielder you would rather have on your team than one who gets 200 hits and plays Gold Glove defense every year.

he broke a record thats lasted over a hundred years..but Tatanka would rather have Derek Jeter...whos gonna know of Jeter in a 100 years from now ?
stirfry at 06:58 PM JST - 14th September
weak reporting...absolutely no mention of how many hits he has all-time

Congratulations Ichiro. An amazing feat, but sadly it doesn't seem to be big news in the US. One commentator on Yahoo wondered why the news of Jeter breaking a Yankees record is much bigger than that of Ichiro breaking a Major League record. It does seem puzzling. I hope that he keeps hitting and the Mariners will be a wild card. It's not likely, but it is still possible. Go M's! Go Ichiro!

Nice to see a real hero on the MLB. Many of the stars there are drug users (Manny), or gambling addicts (Rose) or cheating on their wives (Arod). Or all three.
The man is a lock for HOF in the USA even if he stopped playing today. But since he takes such good care of himself he will be playing for many, many more years.

aintgottimetobl,
More people will most likely remember Derek Jeter for a number of reasons:
1) He plays for the Yankees and a captain (the most storied franchise and arguably the largest fanbase, definitely more than the M's).
2) He's also a future Hall of Famer with HOF stats.
3) He already has 4 World Series rings, and people tend to remember winners.
4) Even opponents and fans admit he plays the game the right way (e.g. always plays hard, hardly complains, doesn't disrespect anybody or the game, no off-field issue distractions, no PEDs, etc). (Many baseball writers say that if there's anybody discovered using PED that would make them give up on the game, it's Derek Jeter. He's baseball's boy scout.)
5) Just passed Yankee all-time hits leader and ironman Lou Gehrig, who BTW people still remember 7 decades later (as compared to, say, George Sisler or Willie Keeler, other all-time greats). Honestly, do you guys even knew beforehand whose records Ichiro broke?
6) As shallow as it sounds, he's got the good looks, star power, charisma, way with words/public speaking/comfortable with the mic, etc.
Not to say Ichiro won't be remembered too - he will be. It's just the reality of the situation. Plus, Ichiro has a couple of things not going for him: he's not a local (people still treat him as an exotic foreigner), and he's not disposed to more media exposure becoming more well-known (e.g. pre-/post-game interviews, commercials, charities, commentaries, etc).
Oh, I think he has around 2005 hits in MLB total. He just broke the 2000 mark not too long ago.

what I'm saying is to get 200 hits for 9 consecutive seasons is something that should be held in awe..Jeter's a great club player and an ornament and whilst Ichiro wont win any Mr Likeable contests he would've helped Jeter win a few more rings had he been playing with him..

aintgottimetobl,
You're right; it should.
helloklitty at 07:47 PM JST - 18th September
Yeah, it was "Josh" not "John".
I guess the only things left for Ichiro now are 3,000 hits in a career and the Sisler record of 257 hits over 154 games.
helloklitty at 07:51 AM JST - 19th September
That wasn't in the headline.
Good looks? What's with the facial hair?
Public speaking? He's like Yogi Berra with an Asian twist. Ichiro quotes:
If you meet a beautiful girl and she's an ugly bowler, you're going to be disappointed.
It's not surprising. At the same time, it's not that usual. It's somewhere between usual and surprising.
I hope he arouses the fire that's dormant in the innermost recesses of my soul. I plan to face him with the zeal of a challenger.
If I ever saw myself saying I'm excited going to Cleveland, I'd punch myself in the face, because I'm lying.
