This means that every other MLB team had a chance to claim Igawa on waivers and passed so the Yankees have outrighted him to AAA and are still on the hook for the remainder of his $20 million contract through 2011. A $46 million investment!
My guess is that in the offseason the Yankees will work out a deal with some crappy team to basically give Igawa away for a minor league nobody, while the Yankees will have to assume the responsibility for most of his remaining salary.

"Igawa said. ‘‘I’m not going back to Japan. I’ll stay in the minors until I get called up again."
Good god does that speak volumes about the homeland !!! "I'm not going back" !!! Sounds like some escaped convict about to shoot it out with the law ! But really now... can you blame him ? He's tasted the good life and, well... Japan must seem almost third world with it's dirt infields and rainy day games in the heat and humidity... blah !

westurn, don't forget tie ballgames, as well, something that doesn't exist in the Western Game.
I personally think Igawa is a fine and great pitcher. I really and truly saw him doing better than Matsuzaka when they both went over last year, but unfortunately, that isn't how it turned out so far. He will get better, and I believe in time he'l far outshine Matsuzaka. Igawa basically needs to get used to the American style of play. I think the rest of this year in Triple-A will help him, and he'll be back next year. The Yankees are smart for keeping hold of him, because I think that Igawa will get better, and he will end up being a better MLB pitcher than Matsuzaka, simply because Igawa's always had this air of maturity about him that Matsuzaka has lacked (in a pinch, Dice-K tends ot lose his cool and blow up).

The word on the street is that Igawa's arrogance is what has led to his downfall with the Yankees. Inside sources that I've spoken with say he simply doesn't listen to the advice he is given ! I say ship him home and offer up his spot in the pitching rotation to some young American kid !

Perhaps, westurn, a turn or two in the AAA Leagues will get his nose out of the sky. I hadn't heard that he was arrogant. If so, then he does have a lot to learn.
