Inamoto hopes reunion with Antonetti can revive Japan career

RENNES, France —

Japanese midfielder Junichi Inamoto is hoping a reunion with former boss Frederic Antonetti at Rennes will help revive his international career. ‘‘Obviously first I have to settle in and create an environment where I am playing regularly. Playing under a coach that knows my style of play is the biggest advantage for me,’’ Inamoto told a press conference Wednesday.

The much-traveled 29-year-old failed to cement a regular place in the first team at German Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt last season and has joined Rennes on a two-year deal. The move sees him link up again with Rennes’ new manager Antonetti, whom he played under early in his career at Gamba Osaka. Inamoto has not played for Japan since January and knows he needs to be playing regularly to have any chance of being selected for the national squad for next year’s World Cup finals in South Africa.
