Firstly, Brazil is hosting the 2014 World Cup. I can't see one nation grabbing the two biggest sporting events one after another.

Secondly, Sakurasuki, the cost of living has jack to do with where they will be held. Tickets are always inflated for such tournaments no matter where they are held.

Thirdly, I hope Tokyo do get the Olympics. The sporting infrastructure created can only be a blessing for our children to use.

And finally, even though I've resided in Japan for over 5yrs, having watched the World cup from back home in blighty, the negativity portrayed on this board was never conveyed to the watching public overseas.

Been to Rio, Chicago and Tokyo. Out of those three, I hope Rio gets it. I can't stand that Tokyo governor and his attitude towards foreigners. Chicago would be OK but Rio is one of the best party cities in the world, in a very friendly country with a good mix of people. I know none of that counts in the selection process but I am rooting hard for Rio.

racist rhetoric of Tokyo's mayor, Shintaro Ishihara.

Ishihara is the governor of Tokyo. Refrain from spewing your rhetoric since you don't know what you are talking about.

presato345; Get ourt of the wrong side of the bed sweetie?

It will not go to Tokyo as many are intolrant to foreigners, a fact which the world outside of Japan is only recently learning.

Ishihara is a yucky wucky man. The fact he is supportedand wins so many votes, shows the way Japan thinks, naughty, naughty, naughty. Hope it goes to Madrid.

Rio would be an interesting choice, but there are some issues. Public transport, venues, crime... It's one of the most beautiful cities I've ever seen (as long as you stay away from the favelas), but it would take an incredible amount of work to get all the pieces in place.

U.S. just had them in '96, but Chicago would shine under the spotlight.

Madrid... nah, they had them too recently.

In 2016, it will have been 52 years since the last Summer Olympics in Japan. Tokyo has spectacular public transport, generally wonderful people, some venues that could be renovated (as opposed to building all new ones), available land (in addition to Yoyogi) and a long-standing rabid interest in all things Olympic.

Rio - I'll believe it when I see it Chicago - I wouldn't be surprised Madrid - I would be surprised Tokyo - Seems like the strongest candidate

I'll see you all back here in a month!

Forbes has just released an international survey with 10,000 people around the world saying that Rio is the happiest city in the world. Followed by Sydney and Melbourne, if I am not mistaken. It may be said the two Australian cities deserve the first place, however Rio is right over there when it comes down to beach, good people, good humor, despite the crime wave and violence. But I really don´t expect Rio to get the Olympics. IOC is about money, don´t forget it, not about happiness or nice people. Tokyo will get it, I hope it somehow gets invaded by millions of foreigners - maybe it will help Tokyoites to open their minds.

    Presto345,

You are right, he is a governor. Too bad the world only refers to Ishihara as a mayor, provincial or otherwise.

No matter how good the bids are it'll come down to politics/Geography.

It'll be between Chicago and Rio. China held the Olympics in 2008 ruling out Japan The UK is hosting in 2012 ruling out Madrid

And the Americas haven't had it since 1996.

Chicago will win in my opinion.

Only 28 days more for IOC members to choose 2016 host.

The nation most favoured by IOC members will win,and the members may be all talking to each other on the phone,to make final choice from the 4 cities bidding.

  • rajakumar at 01:56 AM JST - 5th September

    27 days to go

  • griff at 07:45 PM JST - 5th September

tokyo has had the games in living memory, and plans to use many of the same venues. surely they have no chance in the face of realistic competition

  • rajakumar at 07:59 PM JST - 5th September

Not very long now for IOC to choose host.

Tokyo,Chicago,Rio and Madrid need to do more global publicty to support their bids . IOC global members vote sway, can be affected by campaigns.

  • spudman at 08:03 PM JST - 5th September

This is stupid. Tokyo is not a city but refers to itself as a city. The twit in charge of the non-city is a governor but surely cities are municipal entities requiring mayors. No wonder folks are confused. Whichever Ishihara is a self serving nepotistic tosser.

  • rajakumar at 05:33 PM JST - 7th September

Last 24 days to go, for all four 2016 olympic bidders (Japan/USA/Brazil/Spain).

  • Rugbyfan at 02:24 PM JST - 8th September

Tokyo is not going to win because it is so damn expensive here. They won't be able to fill the venues with spectators because they won't be able to afford to stay in Tokyo or anywhere else in Japan for that matter. The whole "compact" and "eco-friendly" concept is good but the olympic bid was doomed from the start because Tokyo is not "user friendly" and not gaijin friendly.
