here are some reasons why it shouldn't be held in Tokyo:
1) nastiest turbulence in and around Japan.
2) highest probability of a catastrophic earthquake.
3) Mr. Shintaro Ishihara.
Ishihara is a quack. He doesn't want foreigners in his country and yet he is crying to host the olympics. Maybe when history textbooks are written without being whitewashed and Japan has normal realtionships with its neighbors, Tokyo could once again host the olympics.
In an article today in The Daily Yomiuri it related all the planning and contingency planning the Tokyo IOC committee has gone through to make the IOC's visit here perfect. I'll bet JPY 100,000 that none of the routes that the Olympic folks will take on their travels around Tokyo takes them through Roppongi. Then our man Ishihara might have to explain his remark a couple of years back about the "foreigners" -- code for Nigerians -- were taking over the place. But no mind, we all know that he will really welcome the thousands of black athletes, officials and visitors who would come here for the games. Or, do you think he'll have the Tokyo PD sweep through Roppongi every night while they are here?
From a outside point of view, if you look at it, Tokyo is a good place to have any major international event. Good transport, lots of venues, low crime etc.
Of course I'm sure Chicago will win out, because it's pretty much Obama's hometown, now I hear Opera is out bidding for Chicago as well.
After the way the police treated people during the G8 summit -- held all the way up in Hokkaido! -- I don't want Tokyo, or any Japanese city, hosting any kind of international event ever again.
It's a shame, because seeing the Olympic Games come to your city should be the experience of a lifetime. Leave it to Ishihara, the GOJ, and the NPA to ruin it.

Yeah and I can only image US immigration and customs welcoming of foreigners visiting the olympic as well.

to be fair i think all candidate cities engage in this kind of shepherding when it comes to the IOC delegation. i remember some friends telling me that there were certain routes in beijing that they suspected had been quite conspicuously dressed up in order to impress the officials. and i'm sure the london organisers did exactly the same thing. i just hope that the IOC realise this and do their own research into the cities along with the guided tour they're given
and how with the hosts take the negative visitor comments on whale be served? "Promoting peace and harmony for all humankind" is not a one way street where ideals are simply bought as a convenience.

Most of Japanese people don't want to host Olympics 2016 in Tokyo. Mr. Ishihara isn't representing people's wish. Please Chicago wins out.

Ummmm Ishihara can spell? When the hell that happen?
The IOC should investigate Ishihara record on Foreigner comments.
Oh and I have watched his eye blinking morse code, It`s not regular thats as mixed up as his talking.
I vote we hold the games in the middle of shinjuku, maybe we could promote some new sporting events there, what do ya think Ya`all?

No, the main aim of the Olympics is for some people to make obscene amounts of money by using others' money to line their pockets.
If there is a secondary purpose, it is medal standings.
The "peace and harmony" thing figures into the equation after all things economic and nationalistic have been exhausted.
Shintaro Ishihara's overriding concern here is as "hereandthere" states above: the Ishihara "legacy".
