Ishikawa aiming for top 35 at HSBC Champions

TOKYO —

Ryo Ishikawa left for China on Monday hoping to finish inside the top 35 at the prestigious HSBC Champions in Shanghai this week. ‘‘The tournament is packed with famous players. My world ranking is 35th or thereabouts so I would like to make the top 35,’’ the 18-year-old Ishikawa told a news conference before departing from Haneda airport.

Ishikawa, who has won four events this season and is second in the Japanese money rankings, got the green light to enter the event beginning Thursday from his sponsor Toyota Motor, organizer of The Championship by Lexus being played this week on the JGTO tour. The $7 million HSBC Champions assumes the mantle of a World Golf Championship event for the first time this year and winnings are also added to domestic money rankings. World No. 1 Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are scheduled to feature among a world class field at Sheshan International Golf Club. Japanese money leader Yuta Ikeda, Shingo Katayama and Shigeki Maruyama are also appearing.
