Japan chooses base for World Cup

Japan has chosen Itu in Sao Paulo state as its Brazilian World Cup base for next year, state governor Geraldo Alckmin said Thursday.

Alckmin revealed the news on his Twitter account and noted that almost a third of the 32 teams have announced they will be staying in the state, including Argentina.

Itu is some 100 kms northwest of the sprawling metropolis that is Sao Paulo, which will host the June 12 opening match between Brazil and Croatia.

He added that World Cup debutants Bosnia and Hercegovina would stay at the coastal town of Guaruja and Honduras will pitch camp at Porto Feliz, just west of Itu.

Itu! My hometown...I was born and went to the Fundamental and Secondary schools there...It's a nice city...Although I've been in Canada for more than 9 years, I want to welcome Samurai Blue to Itu.

Good Luck, Japan!
