I hope they do well, but I can't see them beating France. I'll be supporting them though.

With all the foreigners on ALL the teams I predict NO country will win haha

Hope the matches are good though but dont see how they can call this a world cup, needs a different name, how about ANYTHING GOES RUGBY CUP!

If you have played for another country at test level, you can't play for another country. Also, you need to be a citizen of that country. But most teams don't have 'foreign' players.

    Bogart

2020, you don't need to be a citizen, just resident in the country for 3 years. Thus, most teams do have foreign players. Many of us would be eligible to play for Japan.

True - 8 foreign-born players in the squad named by JK. However, as Bogart says, they qualify as residents having lived here minimum 3 years. By comparison - us Aussies also have 8 foreign-born players in our squad. The main thing is loyalty to your team - and I'm sure all these foreign born players will put their bodies on the line for their new countries, and belt out the anthems/dance their hakas etc with passion! Bring on tomorrow!

lucabrasi; I think there is an online stream. Kick off is 3PM Saturday. We should be able to beat the Elland Road mob.

No interest in the egg-shaped version of football, then?

Strange, watching regular TV esp NHK you wouldnt think there was a RWC on, last nights sports news was the womens soccer team in an olympic qualifier....snore. Get with the progrom - give the Rugby some coverage! no wonder I dont give NHK clowns their "fee"

You don't need to read Japanese. The have the schedule in English:

    http://www.jsports.co.jp/programguide/month/english/cmonth09.html

Start is 4:30 today for opening ceremony followed by NZ - Tonga game at 5:30. Most times are Japan friendly.

New Zealand are often accused of poaching foreign players from the islands, but they only have 3 foreign players in their squad.

Considering their depth - it is one of the only nations (apart from the small islands) where rugby is the national sport - there is no need! An All Blacks "B" Team could probably lift the cup!

I suppose NHK will completely ignore the event, again. Last time I wrote to them complaining that they showed Waseda v Keio in their 7 pm news but said nothing about the national team. They replied that they did mention the score on a 5 am news bulletin. They didn't answer my question as to why university rugby was seen as more newsworthy than a world cup. I guess it's because all the NHK guys are graduates of Waseda or Keio.

    Thanks Export, Carcharodon and 2020.

Don't have Sky or espn. But I'm sure I can find a stream somewhere on the net.... :)

Scrote - it's the same deal in Australia too. Great indifference by the broadcasters toward the event. Tonights game won't be shown on free-to-air - it will only be shown only on a pay TV channel about 6 hours delayed! Considering how many Kiwis and Tongans live in Australia it doesn't make sense...

urk, just re read my early morning gibberish! still no edit function on JT...sigh

    • should say. All games are live on Jsports: 'Jsports ESPN', 'Jsports 1' and ' Jsports 2'. no games will be on 'Jsports plus.'

I don't really blame all the kiwis playing in the Oz team (maybe Kepu is a bit of a poach as he played NZ U20) - the rest have lived in OZ for years. The same cannot be said of the kiwis playing for England they are pure mercenaries and that should not be allowed. But if we disallow those players the right to live a few months/years in the UK to qualify for the big $$ss from the RFU then the 20 odd kiwis that play for Samoa and Tonga would have to be disallowed as well.

It IS a mess; but there is a system and compared to many other international sports, it's quite fair.

I hope the Japanese team run hard and fast all night on Friday - I hope the Mighty ABs abandon grinding forward play and say: "Yeah, let's play ctach and pass rug by and see who can score the most!"

Japan and NZ fielding 80% strength teams. Should be good to see the ABs playing the Japan All Stars. End of the day foreign players, coaches are doing it for the money or opportunity, no deep intrinsic patriotism involved. Who needs it when the rugby is good and the beer is equal to the rugby?
