Yes, that was the final score, but for most of the second half Mexico was the better team. Sawa saved the team with her third goal, which changed the pace of the game.

That's got to be the most twisted logic ever on this site (and that's saying something!). Let's get it straight...Mexico still hadn't scored, Sawa scored her third (did that make the score 3-0 or 4-0? I don't know), and that "saved" Japan? Lucky she got three, otherwise Japan might have lost by scoring only two to Mexico's zero!

lucabrasi, were you watching the game? I was, and Mexico controlled the ball for most of the second half and had the Japanese team on their heels. I was rooting for Japan but Mexico looked like they would score at any moment. Remember when the men's team gave Australia 3 goals in like 5 minutes in the Germany World Cup? The third goal by Sawa was the one that finalized the result and "broke" the spirit of the Mexican team. After that, Japan controlled the ball and the game.

Okay, point taken. It was your use of "saved Japan" that threw me. I'd have said "wrapped up the game for Japan" or "sealed it for Japan" :)

I bet New Zealand forward Amber Hearn and other players are eating their words after they predicted that they would make it to the quarterfinals alongside Japan. Now they'll have to try to save face by facing a very good Mexican team in their final match.

Mexico didn't have a single, at least a single, chance. Not at all, nothing. I think we didn't see the same game (and you should know you don't play at 3-0 as you would as 0-0, you're not pushing as hard).
