Good for him! Um, I take it he pitched well in the game too? :)

I saw this. Maeda got caught up in the rush and was slow coming out to bat, and didn't get to take any practice swings. For some reason Cashner gave him only slow straight pitches (unlike when Maeda pitched to Cashner) and Maeda cranked a nice homer just inside the left field foul line. Fun footage of everyone mobbing Maeda or cracking smiles in the dugout.

Seems to be getting along fine with his new teammates

A rookie pitcher batting his team's first home run of the season. That's about a once in a decade rarity. Especially with the Dodgers winning by 15 runs but suprisingly no homers in their season opener. Maeda is tied for the team lead in both wins and HR at this point.

He's an all-round nice guy, it's good to see him getting off to a solid start.

With the Hiroshima Carp, Maeda got very little run support. With the Dodgers, they gave him breathing space right off the bat with four runs in the first inning. And from there on out it was him and his breaking pitches, which the Padres couldn't read. And when he hit the homer, he had to rush to get into the batter's box with no time for practice swings. Appears he didn't need any as he popped that homer easily.

Hopefully this is a sign of things to come ... Maeda doing well in the Majors ... and with the Dodgers.

And about that play at home plate ... the Padres' runner seemed to have scored ... but the cameras saw things differently.

He's pitching for the Dodgers, probably one of the best teams in the majors for managing pitchers, remember Nomo?

Maeda signed with Dodgers. Big money. Why should he quit breaking contract? He will stay in MLB until no team signs just like any Japanese players.
