Japanese women finished third out of four in the team event of the inaugural Japan Cup gymnastics meet on Saturday. The squad consisted of the fifth-place finishers in the Beijing Olympic team final, led by Koko Tsurumi, scored 166.500 points on the opening day of the two-day meet at Makuhari Messe.
Olympic champion China overtook Russia on the floor exercise, the final event, for the inaugural title with 171.200 points. Russia was 0.100 behind in second, while Australia was fourth with 159.850. Japan earned high marks on the uneven bars and balance beam but suffered a major setback as Yuko Shintake and Miki Uemura fell on their vault landings.
