" Ishihara has said he wants to bring the Olympics to Tokyo as a symbol of Japan’s recovery from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami,"
THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE EARTHQUAKE/TSUNAMI! This is just an extremely self-centered old man who has seen his pet-project outright rejected a couple of times and is too stubborn to see he is HURTING the people, especially in the affected areas, not helping. Doesn't he realize that the 180 million or so he'll waste when Tokyo loses again could have ACTUALLY gone towards reconstruction and helping the people in the north? Get Ishihara out of there!

I say if you got 180 million yen to blow, just give it to the elementary schools.

Maybe rather than bring this massive waste of money here they could spend the money on the survivors of the tsunami and rebuilding the infrastructure. I think that may be more appreciated or even better they could use some of this money to pay to repair TEPCO's minor cockup.....

The 180 million I mentioned that would be wasted was merely for the bid. The amount that would be spent on construction (not REconstruction!) taxpayers will pay decades for. Hiroshima rightfully dropped out of the running because they are STILL paying off debt on construction for past events.

How about first seeing if Japan, more specifically the Sanriku coast, can actually recover from the disaster. The radiation drama has even yet to play out and Ishihara wants to jump the gun and use the TOKYO olympics as a sign of Tohoku's recovery. I don't know which crystal ball he's looking in but many people aren't seeing the same things as he is.

This is a great idea. The Olympics might be good for Japan tourism industry. Actually, Tokyo can actually host Olympics spending alot less than 180 million. This can be very similar to L.A. Olympics that took place in '84 where they use existing indoor and outdoor sports facilities, such as stadiums, arenas, and use College and company dormitories for athletes accomadations. Tokyo has all the facilities build already, so very minimal modification is required. The return of the investment might be worthwhile.
