"Reigning world bronze medalist Ando..." is that considered an honour compared to gold? I mean, in the next paragraph the word 'reigning' is used to describe the champion, not the third place winner. Anyway, I'm just surprised she didn't get beaten out by Kim Yu-Na again.

Where is Mao Asada? Miki Ando will win the long program and the competition. But it is not good for her to lose the short program at a competition in her home country.

"Anyway, I'm just surprised she didn't get beaten out by Kim Yu-Na again."
Nothing to be surprised of, my friend. Kim didn't participate.

The Japanese men seem to do well....as long as the other skaters are mediocre. Add top skaters into the equation (like Plushenko, Joubert, Weir, etc) and they don't do that well.
I now wonder whether Mao can actually make it to the Olympics. A second and fifth placing in her last two competitions are not good signs. Poor Ando - even when she won her last competition, she was overshadowed in the news by Mao's poor performance.
Looking forward to Kim's next competition.
I have to agree, this is a very very strange expression. When you hear the word 'reigning', you're expecting the winner's name to follow.

["Reigning world bronze medalist] -- Reigning Bronze Medalist means the winner of the Bronze medal in case you can't read properly. Pretty poor reading. Must be due to teaching kiddie english too much.
["Anyway, I'm just surprised she didn't get beaten out by Kim Yu-Na again."] -- Dude you'd say anything to keep the wifey happy wouldn't you? Watch those Korean wives. They don't take criticism well.
