My question is... if that was such a terrible infraction of dohyou etiquette, why didn't the referee reprimand him on the spot?
It's time for the JSA geezers to pull their heads out of their collective a$$es and smell the macha. Sumo is first and foremost a sport and such reactions must be expected. Frowned upon ok, but an official reprimand is definitely going overboard.
@spidey: because that would be even crasser, in the traditional view.
But otherwise I agree with your general point. The Sumo Kyokai just don't want to admit that sumo has to move out of the past and make some concessions reflecting the modern sports environment if sumo is to survive. Only the hardcore fans care about the unwavering tradition of stoicism etc. dating from the Edo period and they aren't nearly numerous enough to keep sumo going into the future.
Did he pump his fist with a middle finger sticking out? If not, then I don't see a problem. Next time he should do the same and say 'in your face suckers'...go Asa!!
Why didn't they comment on Hakuho's look of despair right after being pushed out? According to their 'rules', he isn't supposed to show emotions either.
exhibited behavior lacking in the proper etiquette called for in the centuries-old sport.
Jeez the JSA doesn't seem to understand that even for a centuries-old sport, you have to get with the programme and the flow of things. All he did was pump his fist, compare him to Tyson and the Holyfield ear biting (oops sorry that's a gaijin sport and Tyson is a nutter), compare him to Kameda (oops sorry that's a gaijin sport and Kameda is a nutter). How about positive role models, Yamashita and his emotion at the 84 olympics judo gold? Or Naito in winning in the ring?
I actually enjoy asashoryu and hakuho and kotoshu. They give sumo charcter. Maybe the JSA should start wondering what is it that sumo needs....
Is this Sumo, or the No Fun League? The man went 15-1, afterh aving calls for his retirement all over the media prior to the New Year's Tourney. Shouldn't that be call for a little celebration?
And how does it differ from Takanohana baring his teeth and flexing after his victories over Musashimaru and Akebono in years past?

Next time he should do the Krayon Shinshan number to show them he does not care. Sacred ground to their gods of wood, stone and metal.

Gosh, if pumping your fists is crass behavior, what is biting your opponent's ear?

If pumping your fist is a crass behavior, what is behaving like the Kameda's in the ring?

I hope that when he breaks (Chiyofuni's?) record, Asa does a handstand in the dojo and farts all the while

Musashigawa is proving himself to be no more in touch with the current state of sumo than his predecessor Kitanoumi.

I agree. The state of sumo as it is is terrible. I sense its demise is on the horizon.
