LAKELAND, Fla —

The Houston Astros placed Japanese second baseman Kazuo Matsui on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, retroactive to Friday.

Matsui underwent surgery to repair an anal fissure on March 17 and will be eligible to come off the DL on April 5, five days after the Astros open their season against the San Diego Padres. A timetable for his recovery will be determined Friday when he is re-examined upon his return to Houston with the team.

  I'm guessing, too, that this was not a "baseball" injury.
