He must be an idiot. Didn't he realize the shelf life of a swimmer in terms of marketing longevity is much shorter than a baseball, basketball, soccer or football player???

Even if he goes on to the next Olympics (which he may not participate in) he would have another two years (at most) after that to make the big money through endorsements.

I'm glad they dropped him. Seems he didn't learn anything after being busted for a DUI. I'm surprised people overlook that. Much worse than smoking pot. The guy is arrogant. Amazing swimmer but a jerk.

The company did not renew its deal with the US Olympic Team, which expired in December.

Sorry for the double-post, but.. AH HA. A Reuters report says Kellogg's earnings are slightly up but the company is expecting a rocky 2009 because of the dollar. Maybe Phelps could have held on, in a better economic climate.

That's funny. I am not encouraging anybody to smoke pot, I even thinks that makes idiots people even sillier as they were. But surely the practice doesn't do worse for public health than Kellogs' breakfast sugaring-fattening of generations of obeses.

I am boycotting Kelloggs for my own health reasons. I don't give a damn about Michael Phelps or the Olympics, there are so many better things to give our attention to, such as helping the child-soldiers in the Congo. Maybe Phelps can help them. Does he help anyone? Selling Kelloggs to fat Americans won't help anyone.

Who really cares? Blowing things out of proportion regarding pot has always been the medias goal...you cant have J without being labeled a bad person but you can steal billions and keep your job. What a joke...

The US is so up tight about the "war on drugs" that the sponsors are going to have to react and I'm sure the Sunday sermons will have a lot about Phelps and what a bad example he is. I'm always amazed at the amount of hypocracy the US is willing to put up with. Drink, pot, tobacco, whatever. It's tough to explain to my son why everybody is busy criticizing Phelps while they are sucking down their third beer.

On the other hand with all the camera phones in the world no celebrity is more than one photo op away from humiliation. Which is why the press exists, isn't it. Face it, privacy is pretty much over. It's a strange new world.

His contract with Kellogg was due to expire this February, they merely choose not to renew is all that occurred.

I use to look up to the lad... But not any more. As a person that believes in morals and standards and chivalry I was rather disappointed by his actions, and to think that my little brothers looked up to him is also worrisome. People can make the wrong decisions and actions at any time, but when you are looked upon by children I think there is a bit of responsibility with the actions you choose and take. I feel sorry for the lad....
