Kotooshu, Asashoryu off to losing start in Nagoya

NAGOYA —

Ozeki Kotooshu’s promotion bid suffered a blow with an opening-day defeat to chief tormentor Aminishiki, while grand champion Asashoryu was also upset at the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament on Sunday. Kotooshu looked like he had already given up before the bout began and Aminishiki read the Bulgarian’s body language and wasted no time in working him over the bales at Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium.

Komusubi Toyonoshima turned the tables on Asashoryu at the edge of the ring to pull off a shock win in the day’s finale but there was no such trouble for Hakuho who had too much class for feisty komusubi Kisenosato. In other bouts, Chiyotaikai easily barged out second-ranked Hokutoriki, ozeki Kaio flipped out Asasekiryu, Kotomitsuki weathered a charge from Russian youngster Wakanoho and floored him with a beltless arm throw, sekiwake Kotoshogiku got shoved out by third-ranked maegashira Tochinonada, while Ama rammed out third-ranked Futeno.

PrinceskaNo1 - Kotooshu's going to ganbaru from tomorrow. He'll need to win the remainder of his bouts and the yusho to get his promotion to yokozuna after this opening loss.

I am kind of sad for his loss today but still happy to see him in his mawashi. He has a gladiator's body!

Sorry Japan Today, but your "reporter" must have been watching a totally different bout to the one the rest of us saw today ? Aminishiki's tactics were dirty to say the least. The crowd seemed to agree too as no zabuton were thrown after a Japanese win over the Bulgarian. Aminishiki kept Kotooshu waiting before the Tachiai with both of Kotooshu's hands on the Shikiri-sen for a long long time before Aminishiki's dirty surprise start. In fact, Aminishiki did not even touch the Shikiri-sen with either of his hands. Not nice to see. How come the Japanese media only jump all over the foreign Sumo wrestlers when they use underhand tactics in Sumo ?

NorthLondon - "Aminishiki's dirty surprise start"

Ha ha ha ha ha ha! Aminishiki won fair and square. He can't help it if the Bulgarian gladiator is so easily psyched out!

Zabuton are generally, if not always, not thrown when an ozeki loses, and certainly at no time before the penultimate bout. Kotooshu lost fair and square in my worth-nothing opinion, just way to slow to get out there, kind of reminiscent of his many lethargic starts. Eat some more yoghurt for gods sake. Your two-meter frame is all well and good, but your sumo sucks and enjoy your one cup. One Cup Ozeki that is.

Nice to see Hakuho gice Kisenosato an unneccesary shove out and into the old grey masses. Some passion there. Asa will do the same no doubt when the time comes. Kisenosato too big for his little komusubi boots. Going nowhere son. Not while Mongolia is in force.

    Hmmmmm....

Interesting that the headlines immediately shot down the two hottest rikishi in sumo for their opening-day losses. And this opening day loss hurts Kotooshu's chances for promotion? Really? I thought that Sumo Basho entailed 15 matches, not just one? Could Kotooshu not end up with a 14-1 record? Would that, in turn, warrant him promotion to Sumo's highest rank?

    Hmmmmm.....
