Kotooshu falls flat with 2nd defeat

NAGOYA —

Bulgarian ozeki Kotooshu fell to his second defeat in three days at the hands of Toyonoshima Tuesday and has quickly turned his bid for a promotion to sumo’s highest rank of yokozuna into a lost cause at the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament. Kotooshu lost his fourth straight match to Toyonoshima, again falling victim to the komusubi’s perfectly time beltless arm throw for a 1-2 record.

Grand champion Asashoryu, meanwhile, picked up his second straight win with a quick dismantling of Aminishiki to improve to 2-1 in the day’s finale. Yokozuna Hakuho rolled over 20-year-old Russian youngster Wakanoho with a well-timed overarm throw to remain perfect in the early lead in a group of six wrestlers at 3-0. In other key bouts, ozeki Kotomitsuki continued his winning ways with an underarm throw of Mongolian Asasekiryu after a brief struggle, ozeki Chiyotaikai was shoved out by Kisenosato, while fellow ozeki Kaio made mincemeat of winless Hokutoriki to stay strong at 2-1. Mongolian sekiwake Ama choked Wakanosato with one hand before ripping through the No. 4 maegashira in a frontal takeout to improve to 3-0.

Kotooshu is cute. And that's why the in the land of cute the media has been so willing to tout him as the next yokozuna, when really his record over the last year looks pretty crap bar his excellent record the previous bout.

Here are his stats from the last 6 tournaments, no need to thank me.

    May 14-1

    March 2-7-6

    January 9-6

    November 2-5-8

    September 8-7

    and last July 9-6

That's not really yokozuna material. Injuries or not. Loses today to a guy around a foot shorter than him.

I like Kotooshu and enjoy watching him do well but he's no yokozuna. Case closed. Kyoko Fukada's new drama is on.

true, last basho was just to induce 'element' of surprise and from now on that will be the norm in order to make sumo look more interesting.

Kotooshyu is not cute, he is handsome and strong. Tomorrow he will be 2:2 for sure! And then he will win the basho. He is the strongest wrestler and you are just jealous of his popularity.

    Ganbare Kotooshyu!

    PrinceskaNo1,

there are a few drugs out there that can help you, or harm you. You should choose one coz maybe he is gonna be 2 and 2 tomorrow but he will never be Yokozuna and he will not come close to winning this Basho. love and kisses, Romulus.

Kotooshyu oder Kotooshu or whatever his name is, he has such a kind heart he let the other guys win. He will be Yokozuna one day (when hell freezes over).

But I agree with Princess, he is not cute.

Romulus is totally right. In world of kakutogi only those who climb to the top by age 20-21 are true champions. It's in genes. It's not like salaryman system in Japan, the longer you are in a company the higher you are.If you are not right stuff, you won't be yokozuna. I mean, everyone has a chance to climb to the top almost anytime, but only who has right combination of genes and diligency materializes possibilities into performance. Monglolians in sumo strong because all top Mongolian wrestlers are from Mongolian wrestling family and in Mongolia we value wrestling genes. In other words, to be born in a prominent wrestling family means you have right genes automatically. The remaining factor for success is hard work, that's all.

Hey I scrub up alright after my weekly bath.

Kotooshu is cute. Women in their 40s and 50s really love him. But it would take more than cute and two consecutive outstanding tournaments at ozeki to make yokozuna, and it looks like this cutesy pie European (fawn over the West) can't even string two together anyway. Don't underestimate the power of cute in Japan and its effect on media slant. Just look at how much attention Kurihara of the volleyball team gets, in contrast to Yuri Fudo (who?) despite being a six-time title winner and the first player to reach 1 billion yen in career earnings on the Japan LPGA tour.

It's for the best. If they foolishly promoted Kotooshu, which I doubt they would have anyway (Kitanoumi and his ilk were very quick to declare his quest over yesterday), he just might have been the shortest-lived yokozuna in history, being unable to string even 10 wins on a regular basis. He's not ready. And his sumo is often ugly and awkward, in stark contrast to his cute smile. Baby face, you've got the cutest little baby face.

Kotooshyu will prove you wrong! Now he has two losses and all of you started writing negative things. When he starts winning you will write just the opposite of what you write now. For me the sumo is Kotooshyu. He is not cute but handsome and the model of sumo!

    Sarge

The handsome Bulgarian gladiator fell to his nemesis and the guy who beat Asa on Day One. Toyonoshima is no slouch!

Today Kotooshu will be 2-2 after he whips Futeno, and he will go on to challenge the two yokozuna.

Romulus. I never said I would pony up for a table at the Hilton if Kotooshu doesn't get 10 wins! I'm not rich like you! Tell you what - in that unlikely scenario I'll pony up for a CASE of Super Dry. But if he gets 10 wins, I'll be at the Hilton by 7pm...

    sarge,

If he gets 10 wins? he needs to win the basho and if he does I will even wear a dress for you and book a room.

Kotooshyu is reading this forum and laughing at you guys and thinking who these guys who pretend to understand sumo, Sarge and Romulus, are.

    Kotooshyu, ganbatte!

I like Kotooshu but don't think he got what it takes to make Yokozuna.

If he doesn't win this basho he has to do it the hard way.

Zen Builder, why so pessimistic? Kotooshyu will be the first European yokozuna very soon. I wonder what you will say then.

I will say good for him.
