? Japan Today this is old news. Wanjiru gave notice to Toyota Kyushu before the Beijing Olympics after deciding to run and train at home in Kenya instead.

This is an interesting story. He attended school in Japan, was running for a Japanese club. I wonder if anyone tried to get him to run for Japan.

He is from Kenya. He only came here to get his university studies for free by running for the Toyota ekiden club. The studies and Toyota ekiden club came hand in hand.

Why waste a talent when you can get an education that you couldn't get if you kept living in such an improvised background as Kenya?

Abumaca, I believe Wanjiru is very aware of his decision to give up the corporate rat race of Japan for a more quiet and peaceful life in Kenya. I have been to Kenya. The universities are top notch. Instructors who want to teach and students who want to learn, not like Japan with it's 100% graduation rate for simply showing up. You are right to an extent though riding crowded trains, breathing polluted air, paying outlandish prices for food and entertainment, and simply watching the Japanese move around from day to day in a depressed state of mind is "an education that you couldn't get if you kept living in such an improvised (?) (impoverished?) background in Kenya"

I watched most of men's Olympic marathon and it was a great race. And this man is only 21 !! That is very young for such a good runner.
He will go back to Kenya, where he is a hero, and continue his training there with all the knowledge he has learned in Japan.
This is not necessarily a negative for Japan, I'm sure many are looking at these Japanese running clubs. He saw an opportunity in Japan and now he sees greater opportunity somewhere else. This is really a bigger success for Japan running.
