Mori expects IOC to welcome stadium decision

Sanity is not buiding a white elephant wether its a helemet or an oyster. Money can be better spent on so much more.

This government is so two-faced.

When it comes to fiscal consolidation, they proclaim that they need to retain the ability to spend other people's money "flexibly" (because they claim to believe that the government borrowing and spending money will support growth).

But when it comes a drop-in-the-ocean national stadium, they say it should be "as cheap as possible".

If wasting money is good generally, why is that not the case for the national stadium too?

On which count are they wrong?

The worst thing is that the Japanese public isn't calling them out on this. 250 billion yen for a stadium is tiddly compared to the debts this government has racked up already.

Mori might make way for someone who can be more hands on and definitive and set the model. Although I'm against the Olympics on principle! But at least they could make an attempt to spend my tax yen wisely. I don't know. I don't want to be ageist. But, is Mori really the best qualified for the job? Leave Ando off the search committee as well.

Mori is an idiot. In any other sense of the word, this is called, "bait and switch." I hope all those who supported bringing the games to Tokyo are happy. You got it now baby...

As long as their corporate backers make money and committee members keep getting their perks, just about anything, including human rights abuses, will be accepted. The spirit of the Olympics has long ago been corrupted, so the stadium farce is just more of the same.

Bait and switch implies it was done intentionally. This has just been ineptitude.

Cut Mori some slack. He's only 78, and hasn't much experience.

I love how they try to make it sound as if it was the plan all along to 'cut costs' when the "stadium costs have not been decided yet" aside from them STILL being a minimum of 180 billion before ANYTHING has been said and done. Sorry, but making it more expensive than you promised in the first place, regardless of how much you claim to be shaving off later, is NOT 'saving money'.

As for clueless Mori, he was in there bragging about the stadium and just a day before Abe's about-face to scrap the plans said, "Who cares about the costs? It's to show off Japan's skill, etc.". Now suddenly he didn't like it, didn't know about it, doesn't care, expects this and that about the next one (but ultimately won't have known when the next problem comes up). Ando, another person to blame in this, was also "not available" when the decisions were made that increased costs. Seems like no one was there when the decisions were being made, but do any of them give up their jobs despite being in the hospital half the time? Nope!

How much do you want to bet the 'new one', which for some reason they have to hold a new contest for (for brown envelopes, I have no doubt!), will ultimately end up costing just as much or more than the scrapped one? (and that's not including lawsuits)

But Mori is right about one thing: Japan really is showing its skills, alright -- at not being able to live up to promises, government ineptitude, bid-rigging, and finger-pointing while playing the victim. Well done!
