You're out of date. Nadal is considered an all-court player for a long while now. He beats anyone on any surface. That's how he rose to #1. Clay is still Nadal's best surface, but you're selling him short on hard-court.

Oh, forgot to add: Nadal was the defending champion. Obviously, this tournament suits him just fine.
