What a brilliant match that was! I am paying for it this morning but man am I glad I stayed up to watch it. Congratulations to Murray and to all Britons (esp. Scots) everywhere!

That was a fantastic display from Murray and he did Britain Proud.

Well earned. I wish I had watched it. Congrats to both Murray and Djokovic, but especially to Murray and Britain. A well deserved win, especially after the way he went out last year at the end.

Maybe Im greedy, but I was hoping for a 5 setter! Or at least more of a match from Djokovic. I guess his semi took it out of him. Well done Mr.Murray - Scots should be very proud!

Congrats to muray and also his whole team, particularly Lendl, A well deserved victory, for Murray Great britain and all people who love Tennis......

It was great. Wonderful to see such a great British sporting success story.

As an Englishman, I'm always happy to see our close foreign neighbours do well. Well done.

Well done to Murray and a fine day for Scotland.

Never thought I'd see a British winner. Every match point seemed a bit surreal.

Not even Alex Salmond's desperate attention seeking could spoil the fun. He looked like some kind of half-seal, half-human hybrid with learning difficulties. Nature can be so cruel sometimes.

@zichi

Thought you were a fellow Lancastrian?

Anyway, I'm certainly not suddenly claiming British; I'm English, and none of us have won since Fred Perry, still.

Well done Mr Murray, though!

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

The man sees himself as British though, that was clear in his post match interview.

Murray won it without any help from the English gov't.

I'm not sure how much help Fred Perry got from the "English" government either. If you're saying Scottish athletes don't benefit from facilities in England you haven't heard of Chris Hoy then?

Slap up the back side of the head to both zichi and lubabrasi, neither of whom I would have expected to be the ones degenerating into the Scottish vs British mudbath. Murray won. Good on him, and who cares where he comes from? By all accounts it was a splendid match, kudos to both players.

lubabrasi - I'm the other Lancastrian on JT. Heyup lad, owz thi muther fer soap? :-)

zichi - not a single drop? Are you sure? I'm Lancashire through and through, but I didn't have to dig very far in the roots of the old family tree to come up with both Welsh and Scottish blood. Have a look through the BMDs and church records, you might be surprised.

@davestrousers 'The man sees himself as British though, that was clear in his post match interview' He's hardly likely to say otherwise in flag-waving, pimms-drinking Wimbledon, is he?

@Jimizo

I dunno, if he felt that way inclined, I'm sure he could have made a tactful reference, e.g. "and its even longer since the last Scot won here" (Zichi is wrong about him being the first). I don't think people would have booed that, and even if they did Alex Salmond would probably have drowned them out.

Well done to Andy Murray, a fabtastic achievement amd an amazing 12 months for him with the Olympics and US Open.

Zichi, to say it was done without funding from England is as sad as it is wrong. You think, he's had no help over the past 20 years? No government funding? No lottery funding? Etc.

Ludicrous

But this shouldn't be about nationism. It should be about Andy Murray. Who has just won Wimbledon. And that is an amazing achievement. Even more so given the weighy of expectation from the entire nation.

But, Miss, Andy Murray started it... ; )

The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club Given the comical snobbery surrounding this tournament I'm surprised they allow riff-raff foreigners to enter. Now that's a thought....no English men's champion for 70-odd years....

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

When he wins, he is British. When he loses, he is Scottish.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Too bad such an occasion has generated into what it has here on JT. Good for you, Andy ! St. Andrews cross is flying high today right along side the Union Jack ! Job well done !

first he won it for Scotland, then he won it for Britain

Surely first he won it for Andy? I hope he did, anyways. And his Mum and Dad. And Kim.

lucabrasi - Juss realised ah spelt thi name wrung afore lad, sorry. Bud e'y, juss cos Andy sed it dow'n mean az tha yas't sayyit too, duzzit? :-)

When he wins, he is British. When he loses, he is Scottish.

Quite untrue - please provide evidence for your schoolboy cynacism.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

zichi, can't say I read the sporting media so I've no idea what they've been saying. I bet he feels more of a proud Andy than anything else today, and good for him.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Let's keep it light, folks. I love nothing more than a bit of banter with a Scot or a southerner or a Frenchman, but not when it gets overheated.

Once again, well done Andy Murray.

Readers, please discuss the match, not Murray's nationality.

A big round of applause to Murray whop has shown us all what peserverance means. A talented man who has matched that talent with hard work. A big round fo applause to Djokovic who made the match a great one to watch. Looking forwrd to many more years of great games between these two warriors!

It was a fantastic game to watch as the atmosphere was electric. One of the few occasions where the "live" environment can be felt at home. Well played both guys, and moreover, superb sportsmanship by both players. Footballers could learn so much from you guys!

I'm 100% Scots (and we've looked as far back as the 17th century so far) but I'm proud that Murray said he won for the British supporters.

I can't stand tennis, but I was glued to the game, unable to look away for 3 or so hours. Every whack with his tennis bat seemed to be an effort for him... as if the game was taking everything out of him. I'm amazed that he lasted the whole match to be honest. Well done, Andy... brilliant work! Pity Alex Salmond had to make a berk of himself... as usual, the baw-faced loon.

77 years on 7/7 - Happy Tanabata Andy

If the likes of Fred Perry were playing today, they wouldn't even make it to Wimbledon.

Interesting point and would make an interesting argument over a few beers. If Andy Murray was born same time as Fred Perry, in the same nutritional environment, with the same competitive spirit in society, would they be equal? Conversely, if Fred was born same day as Andy Murray and had access to all the facilities and science that shape today's players would it be enough to give him the edge over Murray? I think that they both have natural ability, and the environment shapes what they do with it. One thing is for sure, we will never find out for certain.
